Steve's Second Battle Against Cancer

Donation protected
Please read if you have some time, thank you in advance for your support.

Some of you may already know me; others may be meeting me here for the first time. My name is Brandt Phillips, son of Steve and Lori Phillips. On November 9th, 2020 my dad (Steve) was laid off from his job due to budget cuts, unfortunately... as many have been during COVID-19. Two days later on November 11th my family and I received the unexpected and devastating news that my dad had been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a fast-acting cancer of the blood and bone marrow that suddenly came on over the course of a few weeks.

For those of you who know my dad, he’s a fighter! He’s known for his love of soccer, family, impeccable yard work at his house and a big fan of Tottenham Hotspur. At 55 years of age he’s a much healthier individual than myself at 25 years old. He still regularly plays soccer and works out six days a week. He’s been in such great condition his entire life to not possibly warrant the current circumstances he finds himself in. In just a week’s time he’s now fighting for his life and family every day since the 11th just to see another Sunday morning on the couch watching his beloved Tottenham Hotspur.

Just 20 years ago, my dad went through (what he thought at the time) the toughest period of his life fighting Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He was told he only had a 40% chance of surviving beyond five years with a football-sized mass across his stomach. At the time, my brother and I were five and two years of age, protected by our parents and unsure and unknowing of what my dad was going through. God-willing and being the strongest man I know, my dad survived the odds after a successful stem cell transplant.

Now, 20 years later, he is challenged yet again to show his strength and tenacity in fighting against the odds in the face of death. Sadly, his previous chemotherapy caused his AML to come on, adding more complication to his treatment.

He’s determined to keep the good fight and take on each day as hard as they have been so far. As my dad faces his toughest days and challenges ahead, we’re asking for your help so that my dad can see another year, another birthday, just another year of life. My wish is for my Dad to see my brother and I get married and raise families of our own. While this is the best-case scenario, a healthy December at home is what we are all praying for at this point. Sadly, he will now miss our Thanksgiving meal at home this year as he will be in the hospital for the next few weeks. We are asking for your help primarily to cover the following:

1. Medical expenses: cancer treatments for the foreseeable future
2. My parent’s immediate expenses such as mortgage, general bills, living expenses, etc.

In the months ahead, my dad will undergo several blood transfusions and chemotherapy treatments, with an eventual stem cell donation and treatment. He’s already experiencing some testing and hard days now after receiving chemotherapy for a week. Please note that any unused funds will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society following my dad’s treatment and (hopefully) successful remission.

On behalf of my family, thank you all for your unwavering support during these challenging times. It’s going to be a very very long road ahead, but with you all behind us, anything is possible for my dad to overcome this disease. I will be keeping this page up-to-date as we receive good (and bad) news. Thank you all. #SteveStrong
