Steve Wakefield Recovery

Donation protected
My name is Amy Nelson. I met Steve Wakefield while waiting for a flight at Houston International in the spring of 2016. Steve and I made a special connection sparked by a common interest in classic and muscle cars. Steve grew up working at his father's body shop and my father loved racing and performance tuning Mustang GTs. With his background in technology, Steve calls himself a digital man, and he is the perfect foil to my analog personality, given my background as a classical musician. We dated long distance for several months, and it wasn't long before we decided to move in together in late 2016.

Steve's background is in mechanical engineering. He received his degree from Cornell University, and has the special distinction of studying under professor Carl Sagan for a semester or two. He used this wonderful experience, for a young man from Illinois, to shape his future in technology. After College and other experiences, Steve settled down with his high school sweetheart and had two great kids.

On October 29th, Steve experienced a lacunar stroke, also known as a lacunar infarct. He was hospitalized later that evening, and has been recieving excellent care at a local hospital in Orange County. Steve is currently in a specialized rehabilitation program where he is relearning how to speak correctly and regaining strength and mobility in his left side. Steve's goal is to be able to get up and move, as well as regain the ability to type so he can return to work.

Anyone who knows Steve is familiar with his contagious optimism. He is determined to recover, however his doctors have expressed that the rehabilitation process typically takes anywhere from 12 to 18 months. Steve will not be able to drive. If you know him personally, you know this kills him inside. Our current residence is not conducive to his current condition. His doctors anticipate a need for full time care in conjunction with regular visitation with rehabilitation specialists.

The recovery of strength and mobility on his left side is complicated by the fact that he was in need of hip replacement surgery prior to his stroke. Not only was he in excruciating pain before the accident, but with the struggle of resurfacing his daily functions, his trek to full recovery will be challenging to say the least.

If Steve has ever touched your life with his light, helped you win a difficult deal, gave you some help along the way, told you an amazing story of his wonderful past, enjoyed a cheers after a great conference, please find it in your heart to donate to his long term recovery.
