Steve McIntyre

Hi, my name is Linda Lavoie.
Steve McIntyre  has become ill and has been in the University Hospital in Edmonton for quite some time.  Ruth, along with her and Steve's daughters, Amanda and Stephanie, have been staying in Edmonton to be close to him.
To help with the costs of having to stay in a motel in Edmonton, along with traveling expenses, etc. I ask that you all find it in your hearts to help this family.
Amanda has set up a Facebook Page called, McIntyre Family Updates.  I have copied her posts.  Many of you have made comments about wanting to help.  This is the way that you can do that. We all hope and pray for a speedy recovery for Steve.

November 15/16
We just had a family meeting with dads doctor. He is still in icu and intubated. He has had a MRI and it confirmed that he has a virus of some sort on his brain, we will have results from his spinal tap in a few days but they will continue to give him his antibiotics and antiviral medications

November 16/16
When we arrived at the icu this morning they had taken out dads breathing tube. He is very weak, tired and confused. He is having a hard time coughing and bringing get up the mucous in his chest. The doctor said that they will leave him for a bit and see how he does before they make the decision to re-intubate him. The tests came back this evening and he's is confirmed to have herpes encephalitis, so the anitvirals and antibiotics he has been on will definitely cure it.

Dad is the same as he was yesterday. We did have him up in a wheelchair for about 30 mins today and it really tired him out. Fingers crossed that tomorrow he will be a little better than he was today

November 18/16
Dad is doing about the same as he was yesterday. He had some visitors today and he is getting his sense of humour back. They are thinking he will be moving to the high intensity unit in the next few days.

November 21/16
Dad is making progress slowly and they have moved him out of ICU into a recovery unit so they can still monitor him. Today they had him making small steps with the help of the parallel bars and physio assistants. He is still to weak to eat or drink anything so the feeding tube has to remain in until he can drink without choking. We have been making sure to take him out and about in his wheelchair to look around and it tires him out and he has a good rest.

November 24/16
Dad has had some set backs. He ended up back in icu yesterday as he has aspirated pneumonia and was unable to cough. They did a procedure on him and were able to remove a lot of the fluid in his lungs. For now he is stable but the doctors have warned us that he may have to be intubated again as he's having troubles. Today he sat up in a chair for 2 hours and has slept so peacefully all day as he's not struggling to breathe. Hopeful that he makes even more progress tomorrow.

November 25/16
We received a call at 4:00am that dad was having troubles breathing. He was on 100% oxygen and was still struggling. The doctor made the decision to put dad into a medically induced coma and re-intubate him. We will update everyone as things change.

November 27/16
Dad is still in icu on life support. He is comfortable and his breathing is getting better. They are hoping to maybe take the breathing tube out on Monday or Tuesday.
