My name is Brendan Doran and this is my story.
In late 2017, I was diagnosed with a genetic heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This condition affects about 1 in 500 people and is responsible for Sudden Cardiac Death (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome). I have been diagnosed with a genetic heart condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. This condition affects about 1 in 500 people and has a huge range of symptoms depending on the stage. One of the main concerns with this condition is that it is responsible for Sudden Cardiac Death or “ Sudden Adult Death Syndrome”, and this can occur at any stage of the condition. This has been seen many times with athletes dropping dead on the field. It does not even require the person to be engaged in high intensity activity. It just required enough disruption in the electrical activity of the heart to trigger the fatal rhythm. As this condition progresses, this becomes more likely.
I started feeling that something was not right around the age of 18 or 19, with strange sensations in my chest that felt like my heart skipping a beat, then beating rapidly, followed by kind of adrenaline rush and sweats you get when there is a jump scare in a movie or someone jumps out at you, that kind of feeling.
When I went to the doctor, I was given a 3 lead ECG , told that I was fine, probably stressed and sent home. I went with this doctors decision even though I kind of knew that wasn’t the case as I have always lived a stress free life and I felt pretty good at the time. I tried to forget about it but every once in a while I was reminded that something wasn’t right with this uncomfortable sensation in my chest, a sensation of a more intense heartbeat, skipping beats and the kind of anxiety that follows with that.
Through the next number of years through college I tried ignoring this as I had a lot on my plate with exams, girlfriends and the good oul craic that comes with college life, and I thought to myself “ hey I’m ok, I’m active healthy and feel good most of the time.”
Fast forward to about the age of 26, I started feeling the symptoms a little more frequently and a little more intensely. My heart would skip 2-3 beats at a time, then beat rapidly for a few moments. My father died suddenly when I was 16, and having this constantly in the back of my mind I thought enough was enough, I was going to demand some answers to this.
I went to a GP in Galway and pleaded with him to have a full cardiac investigation and thankfully he listened to my story, took notes on my family history and scheduled a stress test and echocardiogram. I also explained to him that I believed stress was not a factor in this and that I led a pretty stress free life and was generally a pretty relaxed person.
So I did the stress test which showed no abnormalities, doctor said it was clean. I went for the echocardiogram and about a week later I was called in to the hospital to be told they had found something they wanted to discuss. I was asked questions like ‘ Any mention of cardiomyopathy in you family, any sudden cardiac deaths etc”. I was told I had an enlarged septal wall ( the thin wall that runs down the center of the heart dividing the 4 chambers) and that this was characteristic of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I was told they needed to do a cardiac MRI to confirm the diagnosis. This took nearly a year to get an MRI (our healthcare system leaves a lot to be desired), and a few months after that to get a review of what they had found in the MRI.
My MRI confirmed the diagnosis of HCM and the doc recommended family screening and that the condition be monitored on an annual basis, as they believed the symptoms to be not severe enough to offer treatment (treatment here consists of beta blockers, calcium channel blockers to control rhythm, septal ablation and myectomy when the heart enlarges too much) I have to say I was delighted not to be offered any of those treatments, as I do not want my heart ablated or part of the muscle cut off, these are at best considered experimental and have had very mixed results if you read the journal article publications.
The mental aspect of having to accept that sudden cardiac death is very real with this condition can be challenging especially with regular reminders when the symptoms decide to kick in. A positive outlook on life and an excellent support network of friends and family have given me the strength to deal with this.
I am a huge fan of Joe Rogan. I think the man actively makes this world a better place – and when listening to a recent podcast he had with Dr. Neil Riordan on the topic of Stem Cell therapy and the treatments and results they were having at his clinic, I discovered that this clinic is using stem cells to treat all different types of heart failures (among many other conditions).
