Starting Funds for ThinkingNext

ThinkingNext aka ThinkingNext2049 combines two important elements for me. The phrase “thinking next” and the number “2049” speaks to our goal of planning toward the future. I found myself critiquing and irritated by well-intentioned people who seem to always be applying salve to the pains of being black or brown and from the hood. Everyone seemed to be thinking in the now, no one was implementing solutions that focused on thinking next in a way I felt was most effective.

My aim here is to be some of the glue that catches those of us that unnoticeably fall through the cracks. Some of the ways my team and I have acheived this is by engaging our communities to donate brand new books to local juvenile halls and schools, creating Q&A panels for local junior college students to speak with black and brown junior college alums who made it to grad school, initiating a “Beautify Oakland” project that focuses on planting flower beds and trees in Oakland the real Oakland that hasn’t been gentrified and thus forgotten.

Many projects can be done with minimal start up costs, but that isn't the case with all of them. For instance our Beautify Oakland project would require funds to purchase an arborist to supervise the digging, buy the trees and flowerbeds we'd be planting as well.

No amount is too small! Any contribution would mean the world to be in my team! We want our communities to fell that people believe they can be great and the way to do that is to invest in them.

Day after day the East Bay Area loses a life, a family owned home, a small business that's been there for generations or a chain store that's leaving to a neighboring city because places like Oakland and Richmond are just too dangerous. Besides devasting economies it affects morale. Come together to improve a dilapidated community space, such as a park, would show people that we invest in their communities too; we invest in them.
