Stand Up for Education

Donation protected
My name is Aaron Keup and I am a 5/6th Grade teacher at a small Lutheran school in Reed City, MI.

As an educator, I believe that education should be engaging in any and every way possible. Children should not just be engaging their minds, but should also be engaging their bodies too. Research and case studies have proven that children that have the opportunity to stand at their desk to work, burn more calories and reduce their BMI more than their peers that sit at traditional desks. There is also evidence that students who stand are more apt to pay attention in class during discussion and instruction. By standing, students' bodies are engaged, improving blood flow, engaging more muscle groups, and improves overall awareness. If and when a student feels the need to sit, stools are also available giving them the rest they may need.

Built into the standing desks that we are looking to invest in, is a Swing Bar. No, it is not a bar for students to swing from like monkeys! It is designed for their feet to swing to burn off excess energy that would normally cause fidgeting and the common antsiness! This feature also helps with students that have difficulty focusing because they have energy to burn!

This trend of standing desks is not just found in schools, but in the workplace as well. Many employers and employees have found that they are more productive and less lethargic when using a standing workstation as opposed to the traditional office chair. I, myself, have converted my teacher desk into a standing workstation, which has already paid dividends! I am more engaged with my students because I am not sitting, my students feel more comfortable coming to my desk to work and ask questions, and it also provided me with a little extra storage! I wanted to make sure that what I was reading was true and that the benefits were well worth the investment for my students today and in the future.

I would love to have standing desks and stools available for my students too. I currently allow them to stand at their traditional desk when they want to stand. When it comes to working on assignments or any classwork though, they need to sit because the desks are too short. We have explored options of raising adjustable desks, but they are not tall enough for 5/6th graders.  A standing desk and tall stool would give students the opportunity to engage not only their minds, but also their bodies when they feel the need.

Here are just a few of the resources and research articles supporting standing desks in the classroom. Please peruse through these sites to gain knowledge and valuable information on this new opportunity for students in our schools today.
