Stage 4 Cancer & End Of Life Help

Donation protected
Hey all, Patrick's daughter Danika here. I haven't updated this in a few months, but my dad sadly passed away on June 29th, 2018, after a short and painful battle with Esophageal Cancer. He passed peacefully in his sleep after a very hard few weeks on hospice. He fought very hard to stay with us, but he is fortunately now no longer in pain.

We could not have gotten through the last year+ of his life and his end-of-life care without this campaign, and we are very thankful to everyone who donated, shared, and showed my dad support. Thank you.

Danika reporting in with an update on dad's health.

For the last two months, dad's health has decreased to the point of him being stuck at home unable to fully care for himself. My youngest sister Abby has made the move from New York back to San Francisco in order to care for him, but his money is running low.

Chemo treatments ended a few weeks ago, and after blaming a lot of him feeling sick on his treatments, it's now clear that it's just cancer doing work on his body. He's started immunotherapy but is in constant pain, and we're coming up on the start of his initial prognosis (6-12 months from October, 2017).

Dad is really sick, and while we still have a little bit of money left from the campaign, we are running low, and he's been denied SSDI funding after being informed he'd receive it. Dad's paying rent, his bills, using the money for food, medication, treatment, and more, and my family is doing what we can to help, but we could still really use your help.

Dad is so thankful for the support we've received so far, it's A LOT OF SUPPORT, and it has helped to keep him alive and stress free when it comes to money. Thank you so much.

Here's a pic from his birthday trip to Disneyland in January :)

An unfortunate update. Please read this first.

The day I was scheduled for surgery, more cancer was discovered in my abdomen. My cancer has spread and progressed to stage 4, and terminal, and my doctors have given me the prognosis of 6-12 months depending on how well chemo can treat the new tumors in my abdomen. On Monday, 11/13, I’ll be getting surgery to have a chest port inserted so I can get chemo directly into my bloodstream on a consistent basis. We’re hoping this helps with the new tumors, however, if it lowers my quality of life in any way, I will be stopping my treatment, regardless of how that affects my prognosis.

As someone who has worked for myself my entire life, I do not have a 401k, I do not have life insurance, I don’t have a dime to my name. I really, really need your help so that the end of my life and the costs my daughters will have to take on for my cremation, funeral, etc. don’t drive them into further debt. I plan on continuing to pay monthly rent and live in my apartment comfortably as long as I am able, and in order to do this I need help. I can’t express how thankful I am for the help I’ve received so far. My daughters and I will forever be so thankful.

On a better note, my feeding tube was removed on October 19th, and since then I have been training myself to eat again, and have recently started cooking for myself. Right now I’m feeling much better than I’ve felt in months, and that has been great.

My eldest daughter, Danika Harrod, who is also my power of attorney, remains the beneficiary on this campaign in order to manage the finances associated with my end-of-life and after-life care.

Thank you again so much.

My name is Patrick and I am a stage 3 Esophageal Cancer patient. I've been self-sufficient my entire adult life, making a home and raising my 3 daughters with care. After losing everything in the 2006-08 mortgage crises and divorce, I have still managed to stay afloat though never recovering the financial security and roots I lost. I'm blessed with 3 wonderful daughters who are just starting out their lives and struggling, like many students and working people are, so I'm asking you for help.

I am a self-employed handy man. My only source of income is from jobs that I go out to find and complete myself, and since getting sick, I have not been able to work a single day.

In May, my daughter was able to help me raise enough money to cover my rent and medical costs before I received base-level state Medicaid, but that money has since run out and I need your help. If it weren't a matter of life and death I would continue to work it out on my own, but I am not eligible for State Disability and SSDI will not, if ever, come in time to keep me from ending up homeless during this long and debilitating battle with cancer.

Medicaid is currently only covering a portion of the medications I need to survive. I have been getting nutrients through a feeding tube for over four months now, and the cans of liquid meals are not covered by food stamps.

My chemo and radiation treatments ended in July, moving me in a forward motion to be eligible for an intense surgery to remove the tumor in my esophagus pending a few more tests. My finances alone will not be able to cover the additional costs that go along with this. If I'm able to get surgery, it will be getting scheduled ASAP, and this campaign will help me remain in my own home to recover. Please help me. Thank you so much.
