Help the Knox family

’Ike aku, ‘ike mai. Kōkua aku, kōkua mai. Pēlā ka nohona ‘ohana.
Translation: Watch, observe. Help others and accept help. That is the family way. In Hawaii, ohana (family) is vital to understanding the culture and the community. Ohana includes all who are brought into the family group. It is a give-and-take relationship. This concept of family extends beyond blood-related family to friends, neighbors, coworkers, and acquaintances.

Aloha, My name is Diwa Conner and this GoFundme is for my close friend Jane Knox to start a new life….. help them purchase land and materials to build a house. The Knox family recently lost their home to lava last May 24, 2018. It is known worldwide about the Kilauea lava eruption that destroyed the Leilani Estate Subdivision. They live in Hookupu St in Leilani.

Jane and Sam Knox have two children; seven year old Samsam and 2 month old Bella. Jane works part-time (4 hrs a day) as an educational assistant in Keeau Elementarty School and earns $13.65 an hour. Sam, her husband is retired taxi driver and has no job at the moment. He gets $750 a month from Social Security. The Knox family live frugally. Despite their low income; Sam never applied for EBT or any government assistance because his philosophy is that as long as they can eat 3 times a day, he will never ask anybody for assistance. This time however is different.

Lava Zone 1 Big Island Hawaii is divided into 9 lava zones. Zone 1 represents the areas that are most hazardous and Zone 9 the least hazardous. Houses/properties in lava zone 1 are typically cheap that's why many people purchased properties there. There is no volcano insurance to the best of my knowledge.

Knox house Sam’s dad left him a inheritance and they used it to purchased their house 3 years ago. Their house has no insurance. Their address is 13-3481 Hookupu St.  On May 24, 2018 the lava from fissures 7 and 21 engulf their house leaving them nothing. The family is greatly devastated at the moment. Imagine losing your house where you plan to raise kids and live for the rest of your life. I remember Jane was so happy when she told me they purchased their house 3 years ago. Sam was so proud showing us their home when we visited for the first time. The house was beautiful…. The garden is beautifully landscape but with one blink it's GONE….forever, the sad part is that they do not have enough funds to start again. Right now a friend are housing them but not for long. They need to be able to stand on their own… but how?

Excerpt from Ryan Fanley of Hawaii Tracker “Thursday Night Update May 24A Devastating Day For Leilani Subdivision as approximately 20 homes were lostUpdate: Fissures 7 and 21 started pumping again tonight and have already taken another house on Kaupili Street just now Fissure 21 on Hookupu and 7 on Makamae opened up and poured out an enormous amount of lava into the Leilanie Ave area last night and today. In total, we counted approximately 20 homes that were taken today. We marked them on a map using eyewitnesses, aerial views and photographs. From USGS on the other fissure activity: “Fissure 22 continues to erupt lava that is flowing southeast to the coast where lava is entering the ocean. Fairly tall fountains at Fissures 6 and 13 feed lava into a channel that reached the coast yesterday making a second ocean entry.Fissure 7 and 21 are feeding a pahoehoe flow that has advanced eastward covering most of the area bounded by Leilani Blvd, Mohala St., and and the fissure line.Fissure 17 continues weak spattering, Fissure 19 and 23 are no longer active.”I’m wiped out. Today was a heavy day in just about every way. Each of those 20 homes represented a part of our community be it an individual or a family. We lost a lot today in Puna. My deepest condolences to those that lost their homes and property.” Please help them start a new life again. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Mahalo.
