The UK immigration detention system is one of the largest in Europe with between 2,000 and 3,500 migrants being held in detention centres at any given time. In 2013 alone, approximately 30,400 migrants entered detention.
While they wait for their applications to be processed – which can take months or even years in some cases - people in detention are stuck in limbo without their family and community support networks.
Khalfi is originally from Algeria but he has been living in the UK for 26 years. He has a family and two children here, both of whom grew up in the UK and have never lived in Algeria. He has currently been detained in Colnbrook Immigration Removal Center for around six months, from where the Home Office hopes to deport him to Algeria. Khalfi has serious mental health issues for which he is receiving medication, including depression.
Khalfi told me: “I have a family and two children and mental health problems such as depression. Being in the detention center is making my mental health much worse. I need to be with my family and my children, this is affecting them negatively too. I’m 53 now, I have been in the UK 26 years and I just want to be with my family”.
Khalfi does not have access to legal aid and cannot afford to pay further legal fees to help him get released from detention and return to his family. His lawyers have agreed to support him for a reduced rate, but this is still a lot of money.
Please show some practical solidarity by donating whatever you can afford. All funds raised will go directly toward paying for Khalfi's legal fees, which should enable him to return to his family, and away from the oppressive institution of immigration detention.
