Spring Lake Park Fishing Pier

Let's help David realize his dream to do great things for a very unique community!

David Backes, a very energetic 86-year-old Dassel, MN resident came to me over a year ago with a project that was quite intriguing.  He would like to build a permanent fishing pier on the north side of Spring Lake in Dassel.

David has been working on this project for many years and he recently decided that it was time to get serious and make this happen.  I asked him why he was so passionate about this and he told me the story of how he was visiting a nursing home and he decided that our community needed more things for the older people to do.

He explained that when you get older, it becomes tougher to put your boat in the lake and fish.  He continued by stating that fishing piers like he's proposing for this park are very popular with the elderly, handicapped, and the other generations that like to fish and maybe don't have easy access to a fishing boat.

He's proposing a 100' long permanent fishing pier on the NW corner of the lake.  His proposed addition to this Meeker County park will enhance this already unique family friendly recreation area.  The pier will complement the baseball park, picnic shelters, playground and the newly proposed upgraded playground.  David tells me, "this will be an area that will appeal to all members of the extended family.  I love fishing this lake and I'm sure there are many others that share this passion..  I've had some good luck fishing this lake and I'm ready to share this with others."

Meeker County has already committed funds to this project but they asked David to come up with private donations to show that there is community interest and to raise the remaining funds.  David has reached out to people all over the state and he's already gotten some positive responses and donations.

The DNR has agreed to maintain the pier if the funds are raised.  The county has agreed to provide access to the pier.  The DNR didn't have funds for this project but they did encourage David by saying it was a good project and they'd help him with it if he could take the lead and get it started.

This is a perfect example of a community project that is being lead by a passionate young (at heart) man who has a vision to improve a beautiful park and to create a better lifestyle in the Dassel area.  It is projects like this that will attract more families to our fine community.

This park is already very accessible with a nice paved bike trail and it is a wonderful place to spend a day with the family.  If David's pier dream comes true, kids will be able to ride their bikes and enjoy this experience with those of multiple generations.  There is easy access for handicapped and others that can't get around that easily.

David would like the dock to be 100' long so that plenty of people can use it and so it can reach out to good fishing (depth) areas.  David points out, "the view from this pier will be beautiful as you can hardly see any homes.  It is truly a great view of the wilderness from the north side of Dassel."

We haven't thought about this much but if someone wanted to donate a larger amount, maybe $500 or more, the county might consider memorializing the donor with a small engraved plate in the memory of the donor(s).  This might be a great idea for families looking to invest in their community.

David is being supported by Nan Royce and her team at the Enterprise Dispatch along with Mike Housman at Meeker county.  My company, Xtratyme Technologies, is helping David with this project because we also believe it is a great community effort.  This complements our new community incubator's goal of bringing new businesses and adventures to the Dassel area.

I'd like to thank David and all who have also shown passion for this project.  It is amazing to see community efforts like this in action.  We are so blessed to have people like you in our backyard who can see the value of grass roots projects like this!

If you are interested in donating to the project, please do it here and you can reach out to me if you have any questions or you'd like more information.  We'd like to thank you in advance for any help you can provide--regardless of the size of your donation.

Let's help David realize his dream of fishing on this new pier.  I can't wait to see the look on his face when he gets to use it for the first time! :)  Even more exciting--it will be a great image to see David fishing with his grandkids!
