Spoonville Trail

Donation protected
The Ottawa County Planning and Performance Improvement Department (PPID) is excited to announce the first bike path in Michigan to meander through a golf course that features rolling hills and picturesque ravines. The 3.5-mile-long Spoonville Trail will be the sole north-south connector in a loop of beautiful regional pathways in the County known as the Grand Connection.

The Spoonville Trail project began in 2014 with the construction of the M-231 Bypass. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) included a pedestrian bridge as part of the M-231 project, which offers spectacular views of the Grand River below. On the north side of the Grand River, the 18-mile North Bank Trail will connect pathways from Grand Haven to Grand Rapids. On the south side, the Ottawa County Parks Commission has been working to complete the Idema Explorers Trail, a 28-mile greenway that will connect the County’s beautiful parkland.

The Spoonville Trail and Idema Explorers Trail also include unique educational opportunities. A Native American Educational Terrace and natural area are planned as part of these projects to showcase local Native American culture and heritage, as well as exhibit photographs of the historically significant artifacts uncovered during the construction of the bridge. These areas are anticipated to be a popular destination for school field trips, as the information discovered right here in Ottawa County will be added to the school curriculum in Michigan.

The Spoonville Trail project is almost complete, with just the construction of Phase II remaining. This beautiful section of trail winds gracefully through the golf course, offering a tranquil experience for hiking, biking, and exploring. Our goal of connecting almost 50 miles of recreational trail ways in Ottawa County is over 96% funded with just $80,000 remaining. To cross the finish line, we need your help!
