My company, Cartoon Cuts, will match the funds I raise, dollar for dollar, so that I can travel to Thailand to provide free haircutting training to people living in critical poverty.
We have partnered with Hair Aid, an Australian charity founded in 2013. In Thailand, we will teach a five-day haircutting course, enabling trainees to start their own micro-businesses.
Cartoon Cuts has recently started a program to send stylists to join Hair Aid projects in Southeast Asia. In addition to matching the funds I raise, ($1,600), dollar for dollar, Cartoon Cuts will also pay me for the time that I am on the trip. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I am honored to be given the chance to go.
To apply for the program with Cartoon Cuts, we were asked to answer the following question: Why would you want to spend a week training people the skill of cutting hair? Below is my submission:
My grandmother was a coffee farmer in one of the mountains in Colombia, she lived there with her nine children in extreme poverty. Looking for a better life and future for her and her small children, she decided to move to Medellin, one of the major cities in Colombia. When she arrived to Medellin, her skills as a farmer where impractical; therefore, she decided to learn a new trade. She decided to become a hairstylist. Thanks to this new trade, she was able to make a living and raise her nine children.
Thanks to my grandmother’s experience, I have witnessed on a first hand basis the importance of learning a new skill or a trade and the positive effects it can have on a family, especially in a developing country. I would love to share my knowledge, skills and experience with other families in need, so that they can also improve their living conditions just like my grandmother did in the past. In a way, I feel that if I were to go on this trip, it will not only be a life-changing event for those that I will be helping, but it will also change my life.
Thank you for your consideration in donating to this wonderful cause and my trip to help share my skills. Should I be so fortunate as to raise more than $1,600, the additional funds will be used for supplies for the Hair Aid trainees. I promise to help change lives, and share pictures, stories and memories when I return from my trip!
