Unaka High School is a small school in rural East Tennessee and, like many smaller programs in rural areas, raising money to support an effective program is a challenge. By effective, I don't mean simply in terms of wins and losses on the field. An effective program grows players as students, athletes, sons, brothers, future parents, and community leaders. As part of being an effective program, one of our  initiatives is to involve the kids in community service as a way to build a stronger bond between the players and the local community, to teach them the value of giving back, to empower them to effect positive change, and to fulfill the community service requirements of the Tennessee Promise scholarship which would allow them free tuition at any state 2-year school. Many programs charge players a fee of $500-600 to play. That is fundamentally at odds with our mission to involve and grow as many students as possible. We never want finances to be a barrier to entry and opportunity for the young people in our community.  We want to provide our kids and community with a program they can all be proud to be a part of. Many programs conduct a "Lift-a-thon" as a type of fundraiser in which local businesses sponsor the team on a per pound lifted basis. Our goal is similar. We would like to substitute weight lifted for community service hours worked. Our athletes are actively pursuing sponsors in the community for their service hours on a dollar per hour basis. If you are interested in sponsoring one of our athletes or our team total hours, please message Unaka High School Football on Facebook with your name and contact information as well as the amount you would be willing to sponsor an individual player or the team. Or simply and safely donate a flat amount via our GoFundMe page below. Our athletes are completing community service projects such as delivering meals for the hungry, trail maintenance at Roan Mountain State Park, and landscaping for public spaces. However, we are always looking for more opportunities to give back. Please include with your donation suggestions on ways we can give back to our community. We want to empower these young men and women to change the world they live in for the better, not simply to take what they can get from it.
