When you sponsor one of Providence Center's Teen Leaders, your impact quickly spreads! Not only are you helping a high school student build workplace skills and prepare for college, but you are also giving children a role model and mentor. We pay our teens so that they can help their families and save for college, and $2,500 covers the hourly wages for one teen in our program during the school year. We have ten Teen Leaders in the program, so let's exceed our goal!
Background
In the Fairhill section of North Philadelphia, fewer than half of adults have a high school degree, and fewer than 6 percent ever went to college. But our Teen Leaders defy those statistics! They not only graduate high school, but in the last six years more than 90% have gone on to college. All the while, these teens are working in our after school program reading to children, helping them with their homework, comforting them after a tough day, and playing games with them. The Teen Leaders learn that they can make a positive difference in their community. And the children learn from a near-peer role model, someone who grew up facing similar challenges and who is making positive choices for their futures.
