Give Ted Roy a little help

Donation protected
I would like to draw everyone’s attention to the plight of Ted J. Roy. We all see him working and positively contributing to our community. Given his cheery attitude, it’s easy to imagine he hasn’t a worry in the world. But Ted shoulders a lot, living on his own. Born with cerebral palsy, he has always depended upon wheelchairs and other costly adaptations to his vehicles and home. He later developed a rare thyroid disorder that causes him chronic fatigue and other problems, which so far, has not responded well to treatment. Despite this, Ted has managed to serve our community, working at many local establishments, including Cinema West and his current employer, Home Depot.

The financial strain the special equipment and modifications to Ted’s house and vans exerts on his resources is staggering. The upkeep is costly, the inevitable repairs unending. They quickly add up to tens of thousands of dollars! Our government does not fund vans or home modifications as well as many people believe. Only when they meet arcane qualifications will any percentage of the cost be reimbursed. Ted has borne these costs himself. His main wheelchair adapted van, as well as his backup, are now both over 30 years old! Ted’s diligence has kept them on the road beyond any reasonable expectation. Their sheer age makes them now unsafe, unreliable, uneconomical and difficult to repair, or to find replacement parts.  This in turn has effectively prevented him from traveling outside the Magic Valley for disability advocacy, medical appointments or the like.

Ted has other equally pressing needs.  Ted has a small mortgage, and debts from prior home and van repairs and modifications. He needs a new roof as a result of hail damage last fall, but the insurance company denied his claim. He also has a home access lift that needs to be repaired, a fence that needs to be replaced, and driveways that need concrete, so his wheelchair avoids getting stuck.

Our ambitious goal is to raise $40,000 to purchase Ted a newer, more reliable wheelchair accessible minivan and address his backlog with finances and home repairs. He will appreciate and make the best use of any amount we donate!

Ted is a true friend and loved by many. It is not his inclination to ask for help or reach out for what he needs. Ted is rather private with his burdens, but he deals with them admirably. Any assistance you can offer Ted would make an enormous difference. Please share this appeal with your friends and contacts. Let’s all pitch in and donate in whatever way we can!
