SoYY the Change: Woke Teens Camp!

Woke Teens , a community collaboration!
SoYY The Change

In 2014, the seeds for two community-based yoga projects began to sprout in the San Jose community:
Spirit of Youth Yoga (SoYY) and Be The Change Yoga & Wellness (BTC) . Each had cultivated their own mission to foster personal and collective transformation through awareness-based practices and community engagement, and to cultivate youth and adult transformational community leaders.

The projects continued developing on their parallel paths, and in the Fall of 2016, SoYY & BTC began to formalize their partnership. They started offering a weekly donation-based class for staff and families at Voices College-Bound Language Academy in South San Jose, a Title 1 school, with nearly 70% of the students on free or reduced lunch and 46% english language learners.

As the second full school year at Voices comes to a close, SoYY, with the support of BTC trained teachers, has reached over 100 service providers and caregivers who are developing compassionate and empathic leadership skills. Alongside the adult leaders, we have been training youth leaders as Facilitators In Training (F.I.T's), and are wrapping up the school year with 9 8th-grade FITs. Since September of 2015, we have reached over 480 young people at Voices Academy between ages 6-15 (1st-8th grades), who have grown their skills in emotional regulation, self-confidence, empathy, sense of belonging in their community, and stress-management skills (self-reported via survey data from students).

In parallel, beyond providing donation-based yoga in downtown San Jose at their studio location, Be the Change launched a program to bring yoga to communities outside their studio walls called Conscious San Jose. CSJ is an initiative that hinges upon collaboration to create spaces for healthy, authentic connection as a means for the wellness community to thrive. With its events & programming, CSJ seeks to encourage mindful & compassionate living on the individual and collective level through yoga and expression. Events are held in publicly accessible spaces to foster a sense of connection to our city and community ownership. From over 150 free classes at downtown SJ parks, to offering Yoga en Español, BTC is on a mission to bring yoga to All, and sees that ground-up collaboration is the way to do so effectively. It is in this spirit that BTC is teaming up with SoYY to extend the Conscious San Jose to youth.

And now, the two organizations are officially joining hands as SoYY the Change to launch a summer program for teens: Woke Teens .

We know that Woke Teens build Woke Communities, and these times call for all of us to wake up and act wisely! Here is how you can wake up with us:

We need your help to run our pilot program Woke Teens, with some of San Jose's most vulnerable young people, focusing on awareness-based practices (yoga & mindfulness), community engagement, and creative expression. We want young people in our community to have the summer learning opportunies and experiential education they often don't have access to, and have a chance to engage in their communities in positive ways.

This camp gives teens the opportunity to develop their yoga & mindfulness practice in the peace and safety of a yoga studio setting. At the same time, the Woke Teens Camp will expose these youth to a wide-range of ways to engage in their community and make positive impact. From a visit to Veggielution farm, story-telling through digital media with SJ Digi , and creative expression through visual arts with this Local Color , program brings forth a unique and well-rounded curriculum that celebrates the potential that lies within each teen.

AND, we want the camp to be offered free of charge so that cost is not a barrier to participating.

The summer program will cost $6500 to run for our first cohort. And then, we want our Woke Teens to have the option of becoming Facilitators in Training (FITs next year), at a cost of $3100 to run our winter Mindful Leaders training. With your support, we can raise the $9600 we need to effectively implement these two programs (Woke Teens & FIT Training).

Woke Teens will begin on June 5th, and we need you to help us launch it.

Will you wake up with us and join us in building more mindful and woke communities with SoYY the Change this summer? #SoYYtheChange @woketeenscamp
