Teaching & Curriculum in Africa

Donation protected
Ten years ago I started volunteering locally in my community and quickly saw my passion for children and education growing. As an ambassador for many organizations supporting women in education, I am all too aware of the lack of educational support for children, specifically in developing countries.

A few facts:
- Over 130 Million girls around the world are not in school
- Girls with 8 years of education are four times less likely to be married as children
- More than 70% of people living in many countries in Africa earn less than $2 a day

As a college instructor and curriculum designer, I am passionate about education. I believe that every child, regardless of where they live, has the right to an education. I was first inspired when I was volunteering for Because I Am A Girl––I sponsored a young girl named Ruth and watched her receive an education. Through my experiences with other organizations I know I have a lot to contribute both as an instructor and curriculum designer. I am passionate about giving children–especially young women–the tools they need to receive an education and grow.

So, who am I? My name is Becca and I grew up in Ontario, Canada. I graduated from high school to receive my BA from Wilfrid Laurier University, a graduate certificate from Fanshawe College, and am currently working finishing up a Master of Arts in Communications and Technology. I started my own business 6 years ago working in marketing communications. I am a college instructor and work with faculty to redesign curriculums in their schools.

The goal of my graduate research is to better understand how social technologies can be used in the classroom. A big part of this is understanding how classroom structures and curriculums can be redesigned to better suit the tools available for students. I am so grateful for my education, and want to see children in developing countries also receive an education so they can work, make money to support their families, and have a better quality of life as a result.

I started a Go Fund Me with two goals in mind. First, to help raise money to go to South Africa to volunteer in a school for two weeks. During this time period I will provide assistance within public schools in low-income communities in Cape Town, support struggling students, and help ease the workload of teachers within under-resourced classrooms. Second, to develop small business grants and strategies for women in South Africa to start their own business, gain the skills necessary to run the business, and earn an income to support their families.

Beyond the activities listed above, the money raised will go toward the following:
- Educational supplies
- Curriculum design
- Small business training materials
- Small business grants
- Rebuilding or renovating schools and classrooms
- Flights
- Food
- Accommodations

The first priority will be to use the funds to teach and educate in schools located in South Africa. From there, we'll work on small business support and renovating educational institutions.

If you'd like to learn more about myself, my business, my education, or anything above, please don't hesitate to reach out. You can visit my website at bgmarcom.com and contact me there.
