South Korea language immersion trip

Donation protected
My name is Mary Kadim, I'm a junior at Deering high school (16). All my life I've dreamt of traveling to seoul, south Korea, in hopes of gaining more a cultural, ethical, and lingual  experience. At the age of 13 I was going through tough times, with my mothers illnesses, being bullied at school, and my father away for a while, I started becoming depressed and distant from others,  I don't want to get in to my depression a lot, because there are things that should be kept a secret and are certainly hard to tell.  When I discovered  Kpop(korean hip hop) and K-dramas, I fell in love with the music it had a sort of power on me, it was very soothing even though I couldn't understand a single word being said. The tv shows on the other hand were there for me to use as a way to learn more about life and to actually learn the language. Almost anything that was Korea related made me happy and excited. It eventually slowly made me start to get out of my comfort zone, and try to make friends again despite the bullying I experienced in texas prior to coming to maine. Its unbelievable that Korean music and shows kept my depression away, but that was when I knew how much that culture and that language meant to me.

After coming to maine, I attended lyman, and lincoln middle schools. There I found a group of friends  who were just as crazed with Korean music and the Korean culture as me. Unfortunately while they also liked it, they didn't want to learn the language and further their opportunities life.

I've always known that I wanted to become; a peace ambassador, and I knew I had to learn a second language that wasn't native to me. Knowing English and Arabic is great, but I wanted to further my education and learn a language meaningful to me, something special to me that wasnt common like other languages. Don't get me wrong french and spanish are greta but they are overrated. Therefore i thought korean would be the best and easiest language to learn. Slowly I started becoming curious about the country, so I studied its history and discovered that the Korean reading and writing system was made by the first king of Goryeo              ( seoul) king se jung. It was fascinating and beautiful. It was an easier adaption of the mandarin characters. The king thought that not many of his people were educated due to the expenses of getting a tutor and how hard it was to learn the chinese languge, so he went out and found the best scholars in Goryeo and created the Korean reading ad writing system with them. A while later after learning Korean and learning how to read and write and communicate, I started to dream of a day where I traveled to Korea and made a documentary about it. I want people to understand the korean culture and understand the love I have for Korea in general and why it is so important to me.

Therefore I applied to CIEE a study abroad program in seoul, south korea, I was accepted, but unfortunately I didn't receive any grants. My parents are willing to put in 1900 towards the program and Im saving 2000 for air fare from my job ( i work at chipotle). The rest of the money (3000) i hope could be funded by the lovers of education and furthering young people's opportunities. Your help and funding would mean a lot to me and my family. Thank you, and god bless.
update: My parents are not able to support me with more than 1k so I have to come up with the 2900$ that's including air fair and the 900$ for the rest of the program fee. I calculated my hours and I don't get many hours because of my age so I don't think I can save more than 2k till may(when I have to buy my air fair ticket) so I raised the funding from 3k to 3.5k because my brother has agreed to give me the 400$ so that sums up the 3900$ that I have to come up with for the rest of the program fee (4900).  I haven't thought of pocket money yet but hopefully I can try to get another job and work both jobs to come up with enough money. I just wanted to share my plans with everyone who is helping me so that you know what your money and hard work is going towards. Hopefully I can raise the 3.5k by April/10th. I will stay optimistic and positive. Thank you all!!!
