Around the end of the American Civil War a one-room school was built by West Michigan settlers. The South Evergreen School, District #7 of Polkton Township, served kindergarten through eighth grade school children for almost 100 years until its closing in 1959. Now around 150 years old, it is one of the last remaining one-room schoolhouses in the State of Michigan still retaining its original structure. The schoolhouse has been undergoing restoration to once again serve local residents and those who pass through this section of rural Ottawa County, Michigan.

The school is located on a peaceful, wooded site at the crossroads of Leonard Road and 88th Avenue near Coopersville, Michigan. What was a remote setting in the 1800's is now easily accessible via Leonard Road which follows the Grand River south of the property.

Once fully restored, the school will serve the community in serveral ways:

Local Historic Landmark
One-room schools were primary gathering places for the community. They  were the site of holiday celebrations and picnics, school presentations and other activities. The school's rich history is woven into the family history of many generations of local residents. It allows future generations to remember a time in history that may be forgotten.

Cyclist Stop for Rest and Exploration
Plans are to provide bicycle racks, drinking water, picnic tables and portable restroom facilities to serve the numerous cyclists that ride through this area. There is no other nearby location focused on serving these travelers.

Living History for School Children
The school will be available for contemporary classes where school children will have an opportunity to imagine what it was like to attend a one-room school. It will be furnished with period desks, chairs, piano, books, woodstove and other furnishings consistent with what was used over its lenghthy lifetime. One of the school's original outhouses has been returned to the school and now sits on the property. The original belfry was restored in 2017 with an authentic school bell.
