The Harvest for Humanity team has identified deserving women in Haiti to receive the first ever Women In Technology Educational Scholarships. These donations will provide them with the opportunity to reach their dreams.
When global chair of WIT Christine Bongard heard of Sophie and read her struggle, she knew she had to help this remarkable young woman achieve her goals. The first thing that caught her attention was this smart young woman's name — a beautiful name, one that Christine would have given her own daughter if she had one. As she read more, she realized that while they came from vastly different countries, she and Sophie shared certain similarities in their backgrounds: a mother who passed away too young and a father who worked multiple jobs to pay for their education. Despite these setbacks, Sophie's singularly positive attitude shines. Even with so little, she practices gratitude daily and focuses on how she can give back to others — which she is currently doing as a volunteer learning how to manage an orphanage! Her goal is to run an orphanage...but it's more than a goal. She's already making it happen at the age of 18, and that kind of driven attitude is something that Christine wants to encourage. The more support Christine can give Sophie, the more Sophie will know that her kind heart and giving instincts are right on track.
Big Goal: To be an advocate for children by owning and operating an orphanage
Big Obstacle: Lack of funding and access to current technology
What She Needs: Mentoring, assistance with tuition and a personal computer to help her through university
