Studies in India & Nepal Fund 2018
Last year, I spent four months in India and made connections to some amazing folks who are doing a wide range of new and invigorating film, performance art, music and installations.
I found that my presence worked as a catalyst to help some of these folks move into new territories of their creations - as well as - inspiring and developing my capacities to be of service and to help document and inspire.
Since my departure, I have had a string of requests coming from India to continue this work next winter. Ranging from formal teaching opportunties to helping develop small home studios to record and document local musicians. It is all very touching and a bit overwhelming.
Therefore - with the inspiration of many friends in India, I have decided today to start up a GoFundMe project campaign with the hopes of rasing the basic funds to get me and my basic studio equipment over so that I can realize some of these collaborations, projects and teaching projects.
The plan is this:
I would gather as many funds as I could by the end of November 2017 which would be used for the initial travel cost as well as travel costs within India. I will work my best to match these funds by starting now with an aim towards at least a 5month travel and longer if potentials open up for extending collaborations and studies.
I would travel first to Calcutta, India by early Decemember of 2017 - and then move from region to region working with artists and projects in each place. I will also be researching opportunities to study as well.
Here is an over view of the projects that will happen:
December 2017 - Kolkata, West Bengal
During this period I would also be developing new work creating a temporary studio in a rural location near the school with the musicians Pradip ‘Bula’ Chattopadhyay as well as Rupan Pramukho (UC Circle). This would enable Bula and Rupan to complete professional recordings of their unique musical offerings - in both cases they are new music musicians who encorporate Bengali poetry with traditionally inspired muisc.
December 2017 - Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
Sukhdev Prasad Mishra, an accomplished Hindustani violinist has invited me to help him create a temporary home studio at his family's compound to be able to intimately record and privately produce some new recordings of his direct family lineage as well as close musician friends. I would therefore, install my portable studio equipment, work and live at his home and produce several recordings that he and his family would be able to keep and publish on their own.
January 2018 - Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh
Vio Meena Soni and her Friends of Khajuraho Association have a school for village students and have the possiblitiy for me to come and help introduce young children to different aspects of listening, sound art and as well I could help with general education as well as other projects they have going on in the region.
February 2018 - Santiniketan, West Bengal
I am invited for a one month residency at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan by the professor and artist Sanchayan Gosh. The school was established by Rabindranath Tagore. Where I would be working with students there, introducing a survey of sound arts, creating deep listening experiences.
March 2018 - Goa (HH ART SPACES) / Hyderabad (SNSAC) / Kolkata, West Bengal (Amensiac Films)
Working with the local Goan sound-artist, Divesh Gadekar, we would begin a process of recording and documenting some local Goan customs, rituals and events. In conjunction wtih the performance art center HH Art Spaces we will present and create workshops which would continue to Hyderabad, Divesh’s alma mater, in the form of concentrated sound-art surveys and workshops. Moving back to West Bengal, I am invited to be the sound-designer for Anirban Datta’s new film project entitled ‘PACMAN’ set in the West Bengali countryside, an adventerous sci-fi inspired film will be the lastest from his production house Amensiac Films.
New Delhi (ASHOKA/POLYPHONY) / Ahmedabad, Gujarat (NID)
In conjunction with Anuj Gupta at Ashoka University, we would carry on with experiential sound related workshops that were started in Feburary 2017. As well I would offer some classes and presentations in conjuntion with Droopad Bujarbaruah at his studio school Polyphony. I would then be enbled to continue collaborative interactive performance projects with Kamini Chaudhary. Afterwards there is an opportunity to work with Suvani Suri at the National Institute of Design at Ahmedabad in the state of Gujarat.
THERE OTHER possible workshops in Chandigarh, Punjab; Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh; Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh and elsewhere... (to be determined)
There are workshop potentials in conjuntion also with the artists ChiMuk from Kolkata, Manjot Kaur at Chandisgarh, Suresh K Nair at BHU in Varanasi; and Butoh performance artist Rhizome Lee.
Any help you can offer to assist in the realization of these projects would be most welcome.
