Help Rachel

We would like to raise some money to fly Rachel back to St. Louis for palliative care so she can be with her family and friends.

Rachel Pearline is one the strongest people out there. Sadly she has had to be.  When she was 13, she lost her mother to breast cancer. She persevered and ended up at Brown University.  Her goal was to become an oncologist - to help people,  alleviate pain and prevent others from suffering the same fate as her mother.  Although her path there was far from easy- she ended up achieving it.

Rachel  went to medical school at Tulane and received a prestigious  Fogarty International Clinical Research fellowship, spending a year in rural China studying drug resistance in sexually-transmitted diseases before completing her residency at NYU. Rather than going into highly-remunerative private practice Rachel chose to become a medical fellow at UCSF.

In January of 2014  Rachel was diagnosed with Stage IV gastric cancer.  After more than a year of grueling chemo and radiation therapy and various medical procedures,  the doctors removed her stomach.  The news was all very positive- and Rachel received the much-hoped-for NED. No Evidence of Disease.

Despite obvious challenges, she had kept working through the treatment, and her driving motivation had been that there is too much she wants to do to die now.  This is emblematic of the woman she is.

A few uneventful months followed and optimism cautiously emerged. Sadly during the last couple of weeks she started  experiencing renewed discomfort. The first exploratory surgery was routine, and they cleared up a bowel obstruction. Unfortunately in recent days the pain became much more severe and yesterday she was operated again. This time the news was very bad.  The surgeons found multiple masses and could not continue the operation. The next steps are very unclear- but there aren’t that many options left.

She loves to travel. The Middle East, Africa, Asia and all over the United States.  She has an eager smile that lights up a room and has enabled her to collect friends from all over the world.  She is a bright light.

Rachel’s long illness has stretched her and her family's resources. Her father and sister have been visiting from St Louis and Detroit as often as possible, sharing her modest apartment with her for weeks on end but now Rachel wants to return home to St Louis but is sadly unable to fly commercially due to her ill health.

We would like to raise some money to fly Rachel back to St. Louis  for palliative care so she can be with her family and friends, and contribute to her family's expenses during these impossible times.

Any funds in excess of what is needed by Rachel and her family will be donated to UCSF's  Oncology Department.
