Sweet little Dusk never had any problems before we took in a stray. Now he's facing serious dental surgery in another state or a life of increasing misery.
That other boy, Kapoios, had a lot of mouth problems which were addressed in large part due to generous donations; what our vets didn't tell us — perhaps didn't suspect — is that stomatitis can spread to others. Whether that's what happened or not, Dusk has it bad.
Stomatitis inflames the gums around the teeth and makes eating painful. When it's bad, Dusk will come to dinner hungry, and then run away after trying a bite. Steroids have slowed the progress, but in his case they are not enough. He's had most of his teeth removed, but still the condition advances.
What we're told may be a factor is that there may be hidden bits of teeth remaining in his gums. To confirm that and remove them, he needs to go to a veterinary dentist who will x-ray his mouth, see what's going on, and remove what's necessary to solve the problem.
It won't be cheap.
It also won't be stress-free, because Dusk will have a couple of hours in a car early in the morning, hungry and stressed, before spending most of the day under anesthesia with strangers mucking about in his little mouth.
