'Solitary' - Short Film

Solitary is the story of a convicted murderer entering his fourth week in solitary confinement. A strong-willed and stubborn man, the inmate has thus far prevented his isolation from distressing him by keeping to his routines and meeting regularly with a visiting priest. But a shadowy figure begins haunting the inmate in his cell and threatens not only the inmate's sanity, but also his life.
I'm Dustin Jenkins, the film's writer and director. Solitary is a short film that I am making as part of my second-year coursework in the M.F.A. Film program at Ohio University, and it will be the thirteenth film that I have directed. I am an Ohio native and a true Midwesterner at heart.
I am drawn to this project because I want to explore the experiences of people who are often forgotten and given no voice in our society. In Solitary, we get a chance to consider those who are locked away and despised but who are also still our human brothers and sisters despite their often heinous crimes. Furthermore, Solitary will give me the chance to wrestle with how to show what fear, which is a destructive force that comes in many forms, can do to the mind.
Many films of this scale are shot at real locations, but for Solitary, I believe it is important to design and build a set to shoot on so that we can have greater flexibility with camera movement and light placement. I'm excited about this opportunity, but it also brings with it the cost of materials for construction. In addition, I need help covering my cast's travel expenses, the cost of props and wardrobes, and the cost of feeding our cast and crew during production. The money we raise that exceeds our goal will go toward the cost of hard-drives for use during post-production, film festival submission materials and fees, and any legal fees the film might require.
Production for the film will be from February 26 to February 29, and post-production will take place over the following months. Once the edit is complete, I will send the film to festivals across the United States and abroad. It is set to screen in Athens, Ohio in November, and I have been invited to screen the completed project in Los Angeles, California as well.
Filmmaking requires the efforts of many people pulling together to realize a single vision. Please help me as I collaborate with other talented filmmakers to create Solitary by giving whatever you can and by sharing this campaign with your friends on social media.
