-Practical support for those seeking refuge in Paris and Greece-
As follow-up with some of the unaccompanied minors/separated children and families dislocated from Calais refugee camp, a group of us are travelling to Paris this week. While there we'll meet up with and try to provide practical support to youth and families now sleeping rough in parks and train stations around the city. Having exhausted what little savings they had, those forcibly displaced from the camp are living in increasing precarity. Funds are being raised to be able to buy waterproof jackets and shoes, sleeping bags, phone credit, medicines and to be able to give direct cash donations to those who need them.
Following that, in April, a number of us will be travelling to camps and solidarity structures in the North of Greece and Athens. While there, we'll be re-connecting with and trying to provide practical supports for families and individuals met on previous trips who remain in a state of limbo as they await relocation or rulings on their asylum claims. As in France, those seeking refuge face enforced dependency and precarity.
Although what is needed is long-term solidarity and pressure for policy changes which prioritise justice and rights, funds provide for immediate, basic supports. Whether in the form of needed supplies or cash supports, donations will be passed on- quietly and respectfully- to those who need them. People to people solidarity may feel insufficient, given the magnitude of the situation, but it is this solidarity that has provided basic support structures without which the journeys of those on the move would be even more difficult.
