My daughter, Emily (6th grader at Northwest School of the Arts) and her friend, Abby Pierce (6th grader at Crestdale Middle School) are collecting new or gently used shoes to donate to less fortunate children in our area. The girls found out there are over 4,400 homeless children attending public schools in our area. This number of homeless children does not include students who are not attending school or who are under school age. This number was a shock to them. They have always had a passion to help less fortunate children in our community. Thanks to Disney's Friends for Change and Youth Service America, they are now putting that passion into action. Last year, Emily was awarded a $500 grant to get the project started.
With the help of Abby and friends and businesses from around our community, their first shoe drive was a success. Their goal was to collect 1,000 pairs of new or gently used shoes. In 6 weeks, they collected 1,898 pairs of shoes. Those shoes were donated to Crisis Assistance Ministry and A Child's Place.
Emily and Abby's goal of collecting 4,000 pairs of shoes next year is very ambitious. The drive will officially kick off in January, 2018, but they are always accepting donations of money and shoes.
Since many of you are out of state, we thought we would set up a fundraiser account. We will use the money towards shoes at consignment stores and retail stores. If you want to ship shoes, we will accept donations at our home. Please contact me for our mailing address.
