SNOWDEN'S GUARDIAN ANGELS

ALERT. The families that sheltered US whistleblower Edward Snowden when he was hiding in Hong Kong in 2013 are facing detention and deportation from the city. For more than ten years, their claims for asylum were unanswered. Now, after their role in the escape of Edward Snowden has become public, their claims have been rejected. They can be picked off the streets by the authorities and detained at any time.

Snowden calls for help for his helpers

A brief reminder: The three families shown in the video above are the ones who helped NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden escape from Hong Kong in June 2013. They gave him shelter, fed him, and made sure Snowden got to the airport safely when that window of opportunity opened.

Today, Snowden is safe in Moscow. His saviors are still trapped in Hong Kong. The richest city in the world will not bother about their pleas for asylum, will not provide funds for their children to go to school. The most basic needs such as food, rent, utilities and clothing are not met. And yet, the Hong Kong government will not allow these asylum seekers to work for money either. Instead, they have made something as harmless as washing dishes a criminal offense. It is punishable with 22 months of prison.

Here is a message from Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the lead actor in the movie "Snowden":

This page was set up by Sönke Iwersen, the German journalist who broke the story of Snowden's Guardian Angels in Hong Kong for his paper Handelsblatt.

All donations are greatly appreciated and will be used exclusively to help these families.  Funds are needed for their legal defense as well as to pay for medicine, school utensils for their children and every day necessities such as diapers.

The dispersal of the funds is supervised by the human rights lawyers Jonathan Man and Robert Tibbo who are advising both these refugee families and Edward Snowden.

Hello friends,

(Version française ci-dessous)

Sorry it's been so long since we updated you, and while a lot has happened the situation of these seven vulnerable refugees remains dire.

Our small non-profit with no full time staff has worked tirelessly this year to raise funds, and thanks to generous donors like yourself we've raised over $100,000 CAD through our website (fortherefugees.com) in 2018. That's the good news.

The bad news is that while the refugees appeal hearings for their deportation orders have been held, we're still waiting on decisions in their cases. If their appeals are rejected, as is likely, they will face immediate deportation to home countries where they face threats of death and sexual violence that both Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have determined are credible and serious. Meanwhile, the applications we made to bring them to Canada as privately-sponsored refugees over two years ago have still not been processed by the Canadian government, leaving these refugees in imminent danger of deportation.

Despite the international media attention their cases have generated, and the outpouring of public support for fundraising efforts like this one, our funds are running out. It costs over $7,000 CAD a month in Hong Kong to pay for rent, groceries, school fees and other expenses for these seven refugees. We've also had to hire lawyers to handle their appeals and when their applications are finally processed we'll need money to relocate them to Canada and a nest egg of roughly $60,000 CAD to cover their expenses for their first year (a government requirement for privately-sponsored refugees).

We're in the home stretch now, and we're hopeful their applications will be processed in the coming months, but our biggest concern is running out of money to pay their living expenses before that happens.

Starting this week, Robert Tibbo, lawyer for the refugees and for Edward Snowden, is launching a media tour of Europe that starts with a speaking engagement for him and Snowden in Austria this Thursday.

To coincide with this awareness raising campaign in Europe, we're relaunching this GoFundMe page as a way to raise the money we need to continue providing for the refugees and fighting to bring them to safety.

Please, share this update and this campaign on Facebook, Twitter and any other social networks you use. Tell your friends, and if you feel really bold reach out to us about organizing a fundraising event in your community (info@fortherefugees.com).

Our team of volunteers has been working tirelessly to save the lives of these seven good people for over two years. Now we need your help to stay afloat in these final months and make it all worthwhile by bringing them to new lives in Canada.

Please donate what you can, and pass this appeal along. It might very well save seven lives.

Thank you,

Ethan Cox

Ethan Cox

I'm in Hong Kong and have to say Thank you again to every person on here that has helped. The school year has just started and the two 5 year old girls are safely in Primary 1 and enjoying it beyond belief. They have uniforms, shoes, books....and friends. They have stability for the moment and we are fingers crossed that there is only one more move ahead; to a country that can protect them and end to the fear they have. Helping Snowden cost them but they dont regret it. Remember you make a difference for them. https://fortherefugees.com/

Hey, why have they fled Sri Lanka??? The most amazing and beautiful country??? It couldn't be the civil war because that ended in May, 2009 almost 8 years ago! and it mostly affected few northern parts. Probably they had other issues, nothing wrong in the country! Come back man.

A lot of refugees in Hong Kong are economic refugees. They abuse and exploit the legal system for claiming persecution in their homeland. They are nothing but a burden to the scoiety and it actually hurts people who actually needs to seek asylum status.

I admire the selflessness of the four families. Under limited allowance from the government, it is hard sustaining a reasonable live in this city and they are even taking the risk helping those indeed. Would like to contribute a bit. And before, may I understand how the funding will be distributed to the 4 families and is it guaranteed all funding will be on their hand at the end? This is a warm initiating :) Thank you.
