Hello, friends! Thank you for visiting our GoFundMe page! Freedom to Grow UNschool (FTGU) is an “innovative learning center” in Athens, Georgia dedicated to providing a learning environment focused on “individuality, democratic participation, and student directed learning.” Working through regular class projects organized by the students, for the students, children at FTGU are given a unique opportunity to explore the topics that they are interested in without the rigidity of a “nationally mandated curriculum and spending time preparing for standardized tests.”
For instance, this last fall, the students studied the multidisciplinary aspects of circuses: physics, math, history, literature, etc. After engaging with the topic for six weeks, the students organized and performed their own circus for their families.
Although the school has a very firm understanding of its mission and curriculum, it lacks the financial and governmental support that traditional schools receive in the state of Georgia. As a result, all of FTGU’s marketing comes from grassroots projects and groups, and this summer, FTGU is working to organize a summer camp to attract more students for fall 2016.
Freedom to Grow Emory (FTGE) is a newly-formed non-profit student organization at Emory University dedicated to encouraging FTGU’s values while simultaneously exposing Emory undergraduates to alternative education platforms. FTGU and FTGE need your help in order to make this summer camp a reality and give students a unique learning experience that they would not get in a regular classroom setting.
