Send Smiling Hara to Indonesia!
Our mission is to travel to Indonesia to research tempeh production methods, build relationships with tempeh producers, and share the role tempeh plays in American diets. These bonds will help connect producers of one of the world's most sustainable plant protein sources.
We are Smiling Hara Tempeh in Asheville, NC. We have been making Tempeh, and selling it throughout the Southeast for 8 years now. Our newest creation is Hempeh, hemp-fortified tempeh. Tempeh is an ancient process of culturing beans to form a highly nutritious and tasty cake that is then cooked and eaten like any other staple protein (like meat).Tempeh is the people's food in Indonesia. Not just for vegans and vegetarians, not just health conscious individuals, but for all people. It is loaded with trace minerals, contains every essential amino acid, and with the addition of Hemp seed, you get your heart healthy omegas as well.
Our mission from the onset has been to provide the highest quality tempeh. We have spent years refining our process. Now, in order to take it to the next level, we are sending Chad to Indonesia to research both modern and traditional tempeh processes and recipes. He will also be meeting with organizations such as SCoPe and Mercy Corps Indonesia, both of which are involved with helping traditional village-scale producers upgrade equipment and processes that improve food safety in tempeh production.
We will be posting/documenting all along the way. The journey begins in 4 weeks! We are grateful for your contribution!
Below you will see footage from an Indonesian news channel covering the Smiling Hara story. We were honored to represent American tempeh makers. We are committed to giving back to producers in Indonesia for keeping this wonderful tradition alive!
Headed to Javale, a tempeh chip manufacturer in Malang today, will send photos!
