My name is Priya and I am lead teacher of Room 1 and the Co- Founder of The S.M.A.R.T (Sensory, Motor, Academic, Recreation, Technology) program at It's a Sensory World.
It's a Sensory World is a center serving children and families with special needs in the Dallas area. Since it opened its doors in October 2007, it has grown from being a simple recreational gym, where parents could drop-in to play with their special children, to a center that offers recreational, therapeutic and educational programs for children with special needs and developmental delays.
ISW's flagship educational program S.M.A.R.T, now in its third year has been life changing for all the children and families it is serving. Concentrating on a childs overall development each student enrolled in this program has made significant strides with their individual communication, language, academic, motor, social, sensory and behavior goals. Starting with just 2 children we have grown to four separate classrooms and a total of 16 children and 5 teachers. We attribute this to not only our immense passion for special education but due to our highly trained staff, low (3:1 or 4:1) student to teacher ratios and a unique child centered approach that combines techniques from Speech therapy, Special Education and Behavioral Intervention.
The reality is a program with these unique attributes is extremely expensive to maintain. The low student to teacher ratios, sensory and specialized equipment, communication devices and software for our learners who are non-verbal, specialized curriculum in addition to the day to day expense of running a program are extremely high. In order to stay within our mission to provide a quality educational program for children with special needs that is cost effective for families we will need to raise a significant amount of funds.
