New Organization Dares to Teach People How to be SMART on Social Media

Hi! My name is Janelle Bownes (Founder) and my partner is Shelly Hollis and we are S.M.A.R.T. What is SMART you ask? We will get to that (I promise) but first let me tell you a little about myself (Janelle Bownes). I received my B.S from Tuskegee University and I love (really love) sports. I have worked in coporate America in finance for the past 10 years but I was never really fulfilled. I have always loved working with kids whether it was coaching, mentoring or working for the local school district.  After moving back home to California (from Florida), I would always hear my mother (middle school administer) expressing her concerns about youth and their cellphones. Shelly and I have been friends for over 20 years and graduated from the same High School (Class of 99 & 2000) and have maintained a thriving friendship and professional relationdhip over the years.  Shellys passion for film has lead him to live in various countries around the world and work for amazing production companies such as ESPN, FOX, CNN, Glory Kickboxing, and TOP RANK. We were both very fortunate to have been raised by great parents and surrounded ourselves around friends with the same goals in life, but we also understand that today's youth face more social pressure than we could have ever imagined on our journey so that's why S.M.A.R.T (Social Media Application Responsibility Training) was created.

At SMART our nonprofit’s (501c3) mission is to educate our youth on the dangers of using social media and how to use it effectively while being responsible.  The internet is much like an ocean where sharks swim below the surface, but we believe it is important to educate the youth on how to use the internet in order to protect themselves from predators, scams, and scrutiny.  We achieve this through school assemblies in an innovative and engaging platform. We inform the students of the consequences of social media posts and teach them how to make better decisions. In addition we also show them how they can use social media to attract collegeadmission officers, future employers, or entrepreneurial purposes. We also work with local law enforcement which provides follow up after the SMART assembly by going into the classroom and speaking from their experiences which includes solving cases and making arrests based on social media.

So with all that being said why do we need money? We consider S.M.A.R.T the D.A.R.E for this generation. We believe S.M.A.R.T is needed nationwide as soon as possible. At every assembly we give out mystery bags that are filled with goodies from a tshirt, water bottle, gift cards, etc.  There's schools in low income areas that we need to reach. If you believe SMART is needed please donate! If you know a school that could benefit from the S.M.A.R.T program please post in comments or send this link to that schools administration. #thinkSMART
