This is Twinamatsiko Joshua and me in Uganda this past June of 2017. He had been such a positive and eager learner in 2013 when I first met him. At that time he was 21 and dreaming of going to college.  He has done two years on that path plus huge things in his community in the four years since I saw him in 2013.
Now, all on a volunteer basis, he teaches children using the one computer in the village at the hospital, he is a peer counselor allowed to teach sex Ed and family planning to youth at the hospital, he is a soccor coach for the village kids, was voted by all twelve villages in the district to represent the youth in the District Council. On top of that, he organized the porters who assist tourists doing Gorilla trekking. Being a day porter is a major source of income for local men but was entirely unorganized. He decided to "organize" them, something he had learned about in his first two years of college. They started wearing uniforms, all charging the same rate, rotating so each porter received an equal number of days work per month, and he created a system whereby injured porters had food for when they could not work through a community garden the women worked in. He wants to finish college and needs about $2500USD to get that done. I'm putting in a few hundred. Can anyone out there join me and we can help Joshua get this college degree done. He has a wife and an adorable 3 year old boy. He wants to stay in Bwindi and help the young people understand the importance of the gorillas and the forest to the community, to Uganda...and to the rest of the world.
Getting a degree in environmental education would allow him to educate the locals about the importance of their precious place in Uganda. Joshua is the living embodiment of an entrepreneur--one dollar toward Joshua goes toward educating five kids on computers or bringing a new business model to town. He is a true leader and will have a big impact on many lives. That's why I want to see him thrive. Contribute or just share his story if this is your cup of tea!
