SkatePal Volunteering - August 2019

This August I will be travelling to Palestine to carry out a month-long volunteering placement, while there I will be in the local communities supporting kids that are learning to skateboard.

SkatePal is a non-profit organisation that supports young people in Palestine through skateboarding. Due to the situations Palestine has been faced with, the young population lack a means of expression and activities, skateboarding gives them the opportunity to be a part of something together. It provides a safe space to build relationships and gain confidence through self progression.

From building skateparks to holding daily lessons and with them now being in their 6th year, SkatePal has rooted themselves in different communities across the West Bank.

Why am I going?

Skateboarding has always been a part of my life, it has allowed me to make many friends and meet people from all over the country. It is my main form of exercise and stress release while skating everything else is put to the back of my mind.

I've also had a few opportunities to travel with my skateboard and see how much of a tight-knit global community it is. I aim to continue experiencing skateboarding around the world, Palestine is relatively unexplored by skateboarders and the culture is so different from anything that I have experienced before.

To be thrown into the emerging skate scene in Palestine will be so enriching in terms of learning about the culture and way of life. I hope to create relationships that I can follow up on in the future and continue to watch and hear about how the Palestinian skate scene grows and thrives.

Skateboarding dissolves barriers between people, it is inclusive for all ages, races and genders there are no rules as to who should ride a board and how you should ride it. As well as this it is a brilliant form of exercise and energy release for the kids, enabling them to take their minds off the stresses they are faced with. To be able to introduce the children of Palestine to such benefits that they may have not experienced before would be a huge opportunity and pleasure.

How donations will be spent?

In total, I have to raise £250 for SkatePal, I have already raised and paid £50 to secure my placement. The remaining £200 I aim to raise will also be going in full to SkatePal. They then use this money to support the ongoing projects such as new skateparks, skateable objects or to purchase safety equipment and new boards for the kids to loan at the skatepark free of charge.

As well as monetary donations I will be accepting old skateboarding equipment that is no longer wanted so I can take it to the kids in Palestine. If we skate together or feel free to let me know of any equipment you would like to donate by messaging me on Facebook.

All donations will be hugely appreciated an thank you for taking the time to read about the cause!
