Skanda - the invincible, is a Bharatnatyam show (South Indian Classical Dance)premiering on 8th Dec 2018 at Shorewood High School at 4 PM.
This is a fundraising event to support education for kids requiring special needs.
Akhi Vadari along with the senior students of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod will be performing few Bharatanatyam episodes for the benefit of students at Chaithanya and Adarsh charitable institutions to provide help and assistance to special needs children.
In 2017, a similar free event was conducted by the name 'Thandav.' We got great viewership for this event which was eye-opening for many.
These events show how art can make a difference and bring good to our community. Akhi wants to make a similar impact this year. Come join us and enjoy this free event and also help us raise funds for "Care and Share".
About Adarsh and Chaithanya Special Schools
Adarsh Charitable Trust , based in Kureekkad, Ernakulum, focuses on the rehabilitation of kids with cerebral palsy, autism and Down syndrome. They serve close to 340 children through their centers in two locations – Kureekkad and Vyttila. Another 110 kids receive services at home through their Home Based Rehabilitation(HBR) program.
On average, the cost involved for one child at Adarsh is around INR 2,000 ($30) per month. Of the total running cost, 50% comes through donation, 20% through government grants, and rest from the families. Only around 5% of the kids can afford to pay the full fee. Around 60% of the kids pay between 15% and 75%, depending upon their financial status. 35% of students are below the poverty line (BPL) and are served completely free of cost.
Chaithanya School is one of the fourteen special schools in Palakkad district, but this is the only one that caters the needs of children with profound disability and offers early intervention programs. 149 children attend the school and another set of children receive help through Community Based Rehabilitation(CBR) programs.
The average expense for a child at Chaithanya is almost same as Adarsh, around INR 1,950 ($30). They have a four tier fee structure depending upon the financial situation of the family. Full fees (its still subsidized) INR 750, reduced fees of INR 500 and INR 250, and then free. Only 3 children pay the full fees. 26 children pay the reduced fees. Rest of the kids are served free of cost including medicines, uniform, rice, and transportation. Of the total running cost for 2016-17, 48% came through donation, 22% from Government grants and 4.5% from the fees. The remaining were taken from Trust’s reserved funds. To function smoothly, Chaithanya must find 3 lakhs (appx $5,000) in a month through donations.
Performers Profile
Akhi Vadari
Akhi is a 16-year-old professional actor, dancer, and choreographer. A 2018 National Young Arts Silver Medal, 2018 Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana winner, he has been performing since he was 7 and possesses an insatiable appetite and hunger for dance. His credits include ACT, 5th Avenue, Surya Teja Arts, and most venues in greater Seattle area. He founded The House of Kala in 2016, a non-profit organization.“The House of Kala” focuses on promoting Performing Arts with Youth in the community. Supporting special needs and differently abled children is a cause very close to Akhi's heart. He quickly formed a team, worked on the theme and found the appropriate music and is Directing and Choreographing the dances in the show.
Shushmita Radjaram
Shushmitha Radjaram is an 18 year-old, first year college student at the University of Washington. She began her dance journey at the age of 7, and has expanded her knowledge and love for the art form under the tutelage of her Guru, Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod. Shushmitha took a big step in her dance career by completing her Arangetram this past September and is looking forward to performing on stage again in Skanda, the Invincible. She is very grateful to take part in raising funds for such a noble cause, Care and Share, which she admires for the efforts it provides for special needs children in India.
Sashwatha Shankar
Sashu is a senior at Tesla STEM High School. She began learning Bharathnatyam at the age of 5 under her Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod. She has performed at various venues including original dance productions of her dance school and cultural events. Sashu is working towards her Arangetram in June of 2019 with her sister. She is excited at the opportunities available to carry her love for dance into her college years and continue to learn more about the art form. Skandaa is a unique and fulfilling opportunity for supporting the Care and Share Foundation in their cause. She is looking forward to being part of this effort to raise awareness and funds for the children in need.
Esha Krishnan
Esha Krishnan is a Bharatanatyam dancer from Nrithralaya School of Dance. Under the guidance of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod, she has spent the last ten years learning this elegant art form. She has performed in many events and has now taken this opportunity to perform for a greater cause. Alongside her dance friends, she will take part in Skandaa, aimed at supporting the Chaithanya and Adarsh Charitable Institutions for developmental training to special children.
Tanvi Ganapthy
Tanvi is a freshman and has been learning Bhartanatyam dance for the last 10 years. She has choreographed solo and group pieces and has extensively performed at various locations in Seattle. She has also performed in temples in India. Tanvi prioritizes the dance form as she derives life skills from the art. Skanda has provided a wonderful opportunity to further her passion for the art form, while serving the underprivileged through Care and Share. Apart from being a key member of the Skanda dance team, Tanvi has been supporting the choreography for the Varnam, which is the most complicated item in a Bharatanatyam dance repertoire.
Neha Venkatesh
A freshman at Redmond High School, Neha has been passionate about Bharathanatyam from a very young age. She started training at the age of 4 and has participated in several group and solo performances in the Seattle area. In addition to winning local dance competitions, Neha was also selected in the Indian Raga Talent Hunt advanced category and really motivated her to actively pursue this art form. Neha is excited to be part of Skanda and being able to support social welfare programs through dance. Apart from being a key member of the Skanda dance team, Neha has been supporting the choreography for the Varnam, which is the most complicated item in a Bharatanatyam dance repertoire.
Netra Krishnan
Netra Krishnan is freshman is a Bharatanatyam dancer who has been learning the art form for eight years under the guidance of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod. She has performed for many occasions and has now taken the opportunity to dance alongside her friends in the Skandaa production, directing its proceeds toward the Chaithanya and Adarsh Charitable Institutions. She enjoys dancing and is excited for it to be going to a good cause: funding developmental training for special children.
Shradha Shankar
Shradha is a freshman at Redmond high school and has been learning Bharatanatyam since the age of 5 under Guru Smt.Vidyalakshmi Vinod. She has a very strong passion for the art form and will be completing her arangetram in June alongside her sister. Shradha has performed at many productions, cultural art festivals, temples, etc. and is a part of Indian Raga labs representing Seattle. She is very thankful for taking part in Skandaa-the Invincible to support the kids in need through the care and share foundation.
Nidhi Achanta
Nidhi is disciple of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod from the age of 5. She has been part of many of House of Kala project with Akhi Vadari’s choreography. Dancing connects Nidhi to a culture she was only exposed to from books and movies. Being able to support Care and Share through an art form she loves has truly been a fulfilling opportunity.
Elizabeth Elenjickal
Elizabeth (Lisa) has been learning Bharathnatyam under the esteem tutelage of Guru Smt. Vidyalakshmi Vinod from the age of 5. She has performed Bharatanatyam at several stages. She loves to dance, and is very passionate about this art form. She has been involved in many fundraiser projects for Care and Share in the past and believes in giving back to the community. She, along with her friends have founded this club called the “Shooting Stars”, where they raised funds through mini projects. Elizabeth has been part of previous House of Kala projects and Akhi’s choreography. This is her second year, and she takes sheer joy to dance with her friends that supports a noble cause for differently-abled children.
