Children's Free Yoga Camp, India

$280 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 8 people in 24 days
Every year our ashram invites 20 girls and 20 boys to participate in a free yoga camp. We teach them about the environment, equality of the sexes through sport, art, and we take them on a tour of the local zoo and ancient fortress so they stay connected to their cultural heritage. We use your donations to house and feed the children for the week, purchase school and art supplies, and a few prizes for the end of camp show and certificate ceremony with the Guru.

The children we select come from impoverished families with challenging lives. Our goal is to broaden the children's perspectives about their own potential and value to society. With opium becoming such an epidemic in Northern Rajasthan, this camp could inoculate them against the addiction and ensure they stay in school and development themselves fully. Camp Dates May 15-22, 2018

Our wish for this summer's field trip is a visit to the wildlife sanctuary which resides in the back of the Jodhpur zoo. There, experts rehabilitate the orphaned or injured until they are ready to be reintroduced to the desert, with a tribe of their own species. Monkey, deer, peacock, camel and more receive medicine and rich nutrition and a peaceful bed as they mend and grow. Many of our campers have never even been to Jodhpur, let alone a containment park for the endangered species of their own village. So this is a big learning event in their lives. We provide curriculum and discussions to help them understand the dangers of over development and the ensuing pollution brought by man to his own, precious environment. By the end of the camp, the children are using the dust bins for rubbish, and have encountered a new work - "recycle". It's a whole new world. Thank you for considering a donation to the free children's yoga camp. Your generosity will touch many lives in simple, meaningful ways. ॐ Shanti & Prem, Shreejan

The last day of camp is a sad one for us all. But we look forward to the closing program the whole week as we prepare the dance, practice the song, increase our flexibility so we can wow the parents with our new yoga moves. The stage is set with a little theatre and some costume, patriotic song, a recitation of Sanskrit sutra from the Gita, and some closing words from Guruji and I before awarding each of the campers with a certificate signed by us. And finally, each camper is given a goody bag filled to the brim with donations from visitors: pencils and erasers, notebooks, hair clips and mini flashlights, hand puzzles, balls, balloons, markers, and paint brushes. And last year some funny soul sent us 40 pairs of crazy socks! The students are near tears when they look through all the gifts. And then one tiny child comes to my table to thank me for all our effort and for welcoming him, though he had feared he would not be selected because he was so small. “One pencil enough”, he said and tried to give me back the goody bag. We asked him to keep the goody bag and share the well-earned prizes with his younger sisters and brothers, and to get them ready for camp in the future. These children absolutely understand the incredible opportunity they are given by being selected to participate in this once a year camp, secure inside the fortress where they can focus on the most important things – being children. Thank you for supporting this experiment in ecology, equality, education, and enlightenment on the edge of the Thar Desert of Rajasthan. Blessings all around! ॐ , Shree, Director of Yoga Programs, Shri Jasnath Asan, Panchla Siddha, Rajasthan, India

There's always one in a crowd, THAT girl who jumps in front of the camera to show off her new dance moves, or try out her new English sentence, or help me translate today's module about wildlife in Rajasthan and why over development is a real and true threat to the environment. Thank goodness there is always THAT girl, because the other girls are watching my reaction. I hand her the mic, give her the stage, and let the magic begin. Watching a personality develop right in front of my eyes has been so rewarding. This year she'll be in camp again, a veteran, ready to usher in the newbies. This is our work and we are so blessed. ॐ Shreejan Sita
Be THAT girl!

I found it astonishing that most of the children who attend the camp, who hail from villages far north near the Pakistan boarder, have never visited their nearest city - Jodhpur. So on the last day of camp we put all the kids into a rented bus and drive them to the city to visit parks, the wildlife sanctuary, and Marengarh Fort overlooking the Blue City. Guruji attends every year, leading the 40 lucky kids, teaching them about their cultural heritage. If it wasn't for this camp, there is not another opportunity for them to spend such time with their guru, picnicking beside the lake, learning about indigenous wildlife in the region, and fighting the monkeys for the last bits of the parantha and sangry subje meal that Papu so lovingly packed for them in the morning.
Thank you for considering a donation to the kids and helping this program continue its fourth year. Om, Shreejan, Director of Yoga Programs
