Children's Free Yoga Camp, India

$1,236 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 21 people in 2 months
Every year our ashram invites 20 girls and 20 boys to participate in a free yoga camp. We teach them about the environment, equality of the sexes through sport, art, and we take them on a tour of the local zoo and ancient fortress so they stay connected to their cultural heritage. We use your donations to house and feed the children for the week, purchase school and art supplies, and a few prizes for the end of camp show and certificate ceremony with the Guru.

The children we select come from impoverished families with challenging lives. Our goal is to broaden the children's perspectives about their own potential and value to society. With opium becoming such an epidemic in Northern Rajasthan, this camp could inoculate them against the addiction and ensure they stay in school and development themselves fully. Camp Dates May 15-22, 2018

Thank you so much to everyone who supported this amazing camp. I've just received the finale pictures and their amazing! I'll post more on the ashram's FB page. I will keep this page open throughout the year so that I don't procrastinate myself into a corner two weeks before camp starts 2019. Om SHanti & Prem, Shreejan

Morning yoga classes with Guruji are thrilling for the kids enrolled in the free camp. They arrive early, help eachother spread the mats and line them up carefully. They come to attention on their mats with a straight back and sweet smile. They close their eyes and meditate until their teacher arrives. "Good morning, children. Let's begin." And their heart flutters. Oh, the stories they will bring home to their village when camp concludes! But now, they are only hearing the birds and the equally sweet voice of their guru (teacher) guide them through Survya Namaskar (sun salutations). How lucky they are.

Thank you to all who donated this year. But it's not too late for you to share your blessings with the kids. Because we are short of the goal, I will keep the fundraising going until camp concludes with the closing ceremony and performances on the 22nd. And I'll have more pictures daily! Stay tuned. Om, Shreejan

Namaste friends, the teachers have arrived and are anxious to greet the kids tomorrow as they arrive for registration. It's a bit hot in Rajasthan during May and June, as you may know. But the teachers are all accustomed to this as are the kids. They'll be outside in the mornings and evenings, and in the classrooms and dining hall during the hottest part of the day. This will require large cooling machines which blow cooled water vapors into the rooms - it's much healthier than air conditioning and much cheaper! We get our water heating powder from the sun through solar panels. But the electricity to run the coolers comes straight from the grid at a reasonable cost. I hope you'll consider donating something, any amount, to the kids' camp. Thank you for well wishes and generosity. Om, Shreejan

Oh my, the ashram is sparkling clean, the beds are rented, food is stored in the bhojanshala, the well is full, classroom is set, garden is mowed. What else is there to do? Ah yes! Fundraise! I have a ways to go before this camp doesn't end up causing a deficit for this non-profit organization - the oldest educational and spiritual institution in the Marwar region. Our work here is to educate people about the nature-based wellness that is all around us and free: movement = free, breathing = free, water = free, food = free (from the garden), family and friends = free. But what does cost is art and sports supplies, bed rentals, and extra food stuffs like rice and lentils, spices and fruits (okay, and once in the week we make a special sweet treat for the kids). So if you have a mind to, drop us a few bucks to help meet the goal and keep this free yoga camp booming as a foundational course offered at Shri Jasnath Asan.
