Silver City Fire & Rescue

Donation protected
The Silver City Volunteer Rescue Department is a non-profit, volunteer organization that provides fire protection and rescue services for the town of Silver City, three Mills County Townships and a portion of one Pottawattamie County Township. The fire department also provides mutual aid to neighboring fire departments, and our rescue area is approximately double that size.

Due to limited funding, we rely on grants, private contributions, and our annual fundraiser to help with the purchase of supplies, equipment, and special projects. Each year we establish a goal to purchase needed items with the proceeds from our fundraisers.

Silver City Rescue is a Basic Life Support (BLS) service. Silver City Rescue is an all volunteer organization with 12 members and provides emergency medical services to Silver City, Mineola, and approximately a 25-mile radius surrounding these two communities. Silver City Rescue is the primary emergency medical service for this area.

Silver City Rescue is in need of your support to improve the state of our equipment, primarily our ambulances. It was not until late 2016 that we started to bill patients for our services. We now began to receive some income to help us pay for repairs. However, it is still difficult to maintain our equipment and ambulances because the cost exceeds our income. We are targeting the general repairs for the ambulances and the essential equipment within the ambulance, for example, ambulance cots for safe patient handling and heart monitors for evaluation of the heart rhythms along with other safety improvements for both patients and EMTs.  Our ambulances are nearly 20 years old. In the recent past, our need for repairs has been increasing, and it is not uncommon to have 1 of 2 ambulances in the automotive shop for repairs. We have been very fortunate that we have people in the community that are willing volunteer their shops to help fix our ambulances for just the cost of parts. We are concerned that these problems compromise our ability to respond to calls as well as patient and our response crew’s safety. Silver City Rescue was 1 of 2 rescue units in Mills County Iowa who answered 100% of their calls.
