Helping a Homeless Veteran

19 May 2017

Today is Day 5 of sleeping in my car. I've run out what little money and pride I had. I figured there is nothing left to lose and might as well try and reach out to some strangers for help.

Let me tell you about how ended up here. I got out of the U.S. Air Force in Feb 2016 after a little over 6 years because of some mental issues. I've been couch surfing since. Moved to 3 different states trying to rebuild my life. I found a few jobs and worked my butt off but things fell apart because of one thing or another. I didn't let life get me down however. I couldn't. I held on to what bit of sanity and hope I had. I couldn't end up in that dark place again because I'm not sure if I would make it out a 2nd time.

I found a job here in Portland and things are looking up! However, I don't start for another 3 weeks. I tried to get assistance from the government programs designed to assist people in times of need being the cliche homeless veteran. The Veterans Affairs Office being one of them.

After my interview with them, I was told that because I had a job lined up, I made too much money for some reason. Even though I haven't started working yet. I asked if I would have been better off not having a job lined up? They explained that my homelessness wasn't as severe as other homeless veterans. I totally agree. But I figured that somehow they would help someone who was actively trying to themselves. Even for a short while.

I wasn't asking to live off welfare for an extended period of time, or even I end up in some permanent housing that very same day. But I had hoped that they would be able to help me in my temporary situation. It wasn't so. I got on several waiting lists. Back to sleeping in my car in random parking lots I went.

Which is where I am now, writing this down with what little I own. I've exhausted all my resources. Called in all my favors. I know this is a shot in the dark but it's worth a try.

If you are skeptical, I understand. I can give you my contact info if you have a question about something. I will also upload the receipts if by some miracle this works out.

If you are unable, I understand as well. We all have different challenges in our lives. I'm rooting for you to get through yours because I can promise you I'm gonna do my best to get through mine.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
