Operation Transportation

Shore House provides a valuable service to adults living with severe mental illness, but the lack of public transportation in Monmouth County makes it difficult for members to participate.

Your contribution can make the difference between a member’s integration into society and their total isolation.  So, please help us reach our goal by making a donation of any amount today!

Shore House’s goal is to provide transportation to and from our Clubhouse for members who cannot drive.  Last year, we successfully raised money for a minivan and now we need to raise money for a driver to transport our members to and from the Clubhouse. Our goal is to hire a full-time driver by the end of 2016. Two of our donors have started our funds with a total of $6,000. Also, for every $3,000 we raise from generous donors like you, one of our donors will donate $1,000.

We are not your typical mental health program;

·        There are no doctors, therapy, or groups here;

·        We consider work to be therapeutic and participants (known as members) run Shore House and all of its programs along with our two staff members and one intern;

·        Our model is very empowering for members and helps combat the stigma of mental illness.

Why We Need to Get to Shore House…

“I was having a difficult time when I received a call asking me to come back to Shore House; I went the next day.  After a few days of socialization and Shore House’s unique work-ordered day, I felt much better.  I averted an inpatient stay at the hospital and no longer need a change in my medication.  At Shore House I feel a sense of purpose and dignity.  I now have a fulfilling life filled with purpose and friends, despite my mental illness.”

A Word from our Executive Director about Transportation

Before I worked at Shore House, transportation was not something I thought twice about since my car is in my driveway for me to use whenever needed.  Now I see how the members are at the mercy of public transportation which effects their daily routine. It makes me realize how fortunate I am to not have to rely on it.

Most members need to walk a considerable distance to the bus stop.  This is made more difficult in bad weather.  Poor weather conditions often force our members to abandon their plans to come to Shore House. They end up home alone in an empty apartment which isolates them.

A van driver will allow us to launch this desperately needed transportation system for our members and help break the bonds of isolation to which so many of our members fall victim.
