Hi I'm Shaun Olsen and I have been elected as 1st Alternate for the WA State Bernie Sanders Delegation going to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. I've been a Yuge Bernie supporter since I first learned about him almost a decade ago when he started doing Brunch with Bernie. I've been following him ever since and he still manages to impress me daily. I've always kept up on what was going on in the world but never really thought I could make a difference. That has changed.
About a year ago my wife and I got involved in our Legislative District and were amazed to see how starved it was for volunteers. We've since volunteered for everything we could including caucus planning, resolutions, platform, rules, and community outreach committees. I also became the PCO of my precint. We were very involved in every step of the caucus process, have been helping to expanding our membership and have nearly doubled our PCO count in our district. WHEN Bernie gets elected it's these types of volunteers that will be needed to be his ground level support. We will be ready and we will continue help usher in new blood. As the community outreach committee, we have been working on developing civics workshops and places to organize. Our goal is to help people get the skills they need to navigate the system and bring about the change we all so passionately want and so desperately need.
The most endearing characteristic of Bernie for me is how he leads by example, and I take that example seriously. He represents me and I am excited that I have an opportunity to return the favor by representing Bernie and all of us in Philadelphia.
This will be an expensive trip well out of my range of affordability, so I'm sorry to ask for donations (I truly am, it should not cost this much to participate in our democracy), and asking for money is definitely at the bottom of my range of skills if it's a skill I possess at all. But if you want Bernie to be fully represented when it comes time to nominate and you have a few extra bucks I could certainly use it. Thanks.
Here are some of the estimated costs I've seen floating around:
Hotel....$2,500....Airfare....$1200....
Food....$400....Ground transportation....$400....
Other fees and miscellaneous....$500....
Total = around $5000
I've also seen estimates upwards of $7000. Every little bit helps, but I try to be resourceful and frugal, so hopefully I don't need that much. I would be willing to sleep in someone's bathtub or on the floor if need be :)
I need the bulk of these funds by around July 20, 2016. The convention begins July 25th.
I would be so grateful for any financial assistance you can provide. Get involved, stay active, and join the Revolution!
