Sharry Buhanan-Decker passed away in childbirth June 16th, 2016 due to a very rare and often fatal Amniotic Fluid Embolism. She was my best friend and soulmate for 12 years. Our beautiful baby boy JJ survived and at 9 months is progressing amazingly considering his somewhat dismal early outlook. We have been supported by loving families, kind friends and compassionate strangers. You can read a bit about our story on Sharry's blog that I have continued.
Sharry, an incredibly creative, adventurous and loving person always kept a bucket list: a list full of the grand and the small. Items included trips, artistic pursuits, learning aspirations and ways to make a difference, to love more deeply and to experience life more fully. This list now serves as a road map for JJ and I to live our lives by. The very last item that she added to her bucket list was, “Treasure hunt student grants, creative giving ($10k give back to nature and education).” Two of Sharry’s greatest passions were nature and education. Her idea of a treasure hunt scholarship brings these two passions together.
Here is the plan:
I will donate the majority of the money to her beautiful idea, by creating an annual scholarship treasure hunt of $2,900 for students grades 7-12.
I will post weekly treasure hunt clues beginning in April on a Twitter and Instagram account dedicated to this memorial.
This will be advertised in high schools throughout the state and I hope to get on TV news and radio as well.
I will begin with broad and general hints getting more precise each week until one student, grades 7-12 finds the treasure.

At that time I will either create a Utah Education Savings Plan with $2900 or donate that amount to an already existing UESP account.
That’s where you generous folks come in.
I will do an annual Sharry’s treasure hunt/scholarship for at least 5 years and I would love to do more depending on your donations and my financial standing in 5 years.
Every dollar raised will directly go to helping Utah students connect with nature and education. This in turn will help JJ and me connect with our lost love by making one of her dreams a reality.
