Sharing Warmth in Bekaa Valley

+++ PLEASE NOTE: The money is being fundraised in Norwegian Krone (NOK), because of money laundering prevention in Lebanon the money will go to our Norwegian Branch who will then transfer the money to us. Please contact me if further clarification is needed. +++

The snowstorm Norma battered North Eastern Lebanon with heavy snow, rain and strong winds affecting nearly 250,000 refugees. Hundreds of refugee camps and settlements in the area from the Akkar Plain to Bekaa Valley have been devastated by the storm. The camps house thousands of Syrian refugees in little more than tents and improvised wooden structures. UNHCR reported 70% of Syrian refugees in Lebanon live below the poverty line and 41% have precarious and unsafe housing . UNHCR has also reported the collapse of 15 informal settlements out of 66 that were heavily impacted. Some camps have been flooded with as much as half a meter of water. Collapsing and flooded tents, inadequate supplies of fuel, food, heating stoves, and suitable clothing for the freezing conditions are among the greatest needs at the moment. This is an humanitarian crisis. Next Monday we are awaiting another heavy storm, it is foreseen that the temperatures will drop to sub zero.

These families are living in tents, with all their clothes and possessions soaked and temperatures below freezing. Children, elderly, the infirm and vulnerable will not survive much longer without being moved to warm and dry locations. This is a humanitarian nightmare and will require an enormous coordinated effort to reach all of these camps in time.

We urgently need your help to respond rapidly and upgrade the refugee's housing to shelters/locations that can adequately handle these harsh conditions.

Do you have a few dollars you can donate?

My name is Shaya - I'm a young Australian currently working as a coordinator at Salam LADC - Lebanese Association for Development and Communication - in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon.

I'm fundraising on behalf of small team of local and international volunteers who work long and hard in the field to support vulnerable populations in Lebanon. We provide direct aid in close collaboration with the community, our beneficiaries and other partners. We will do our best to ensure that the aid we are providing is targeting individuals who have been assessed as not only vulnerable, but who also would otherwise not receive support.

Where do your funds go:
This winter, we again are cooperating with local and international NGOs to determine the true need on the ground. Based off thorough assessments, we will provide aid to this humanitarian crisis in a timely and efficient manner, that provides our beneficiaries with the urgent support they need. The type of items we will give these families will depend on how much money we receive but we are aiming to distribute blankets, fuel, wood and tent covers. Depending on needs we will see where the money will be needed most. But it seems that at the moment most possibly we will first use the collected funds for distributing diesel to the most vulnerable families.

Costs in USD:

1 liter of diesel: $0.70 (equivalent to 5,93 NOK)
-> For one family we would need at least 40liters to mitigate their suffering for one week

Where we work:
We are located in Bekaa Valley, Lebanon. Lebanon is a small country surrounded by Syria in the north and the east, and Israel to the south. Lebanon has a population of about 4 million people and a staggering population of refugees that is estimated to be close to 2 million. This makes it the number one country in the world when it comes to refugees per capita. With the valley located on average 1,000m above sea level, winters are particularly harsh. A meter of snow is not uncommon. Flooding is rampant and torrential rains frequent. Hundreds of thousands of people living in homemade tents and substandard buildings, without insulation, are trying to keep their families warm during the winter.
