We are Team ‘Aegis’, a group of four Computer Engineering Undergraduate students from IOE, Pulchowk Campus. We are the winners of 'Hult Prize at Tribhuvan University', a gateway to the global 8th Annual Hult Prize Challenge. As the winners from Tribhuvan University, we earned a spot to represent Nepal and TU at the ‘Dubai Regional Finals of the Hult Prize 2017’ held in Dubai on March 3-4.
We need your help to implement our ideas in Nepal.

Hult Prize : An Introduction
Hult Prize Competition is an annual, global, social impact start-up competition offered by the Hult International Business School in partnership with Clinton Global Initiative and President Bill Clinton. The Hult Prize brings the brightest students from around the globe together to focus their passion, energy, and talent on bringing their ideas from paper, to reality, to impact for building a startup to solve a single problem. Every year President Bill Clinton selects a global issue of utmost need for attendance and releases a challenge draft. Students from differents universities across different fields and streams compete together to present their idea of a viable social enterprise targeted to solve the given issue. The ultimate winning team will receive USD 1 million in seed capital for kickstarting their initiative as a global startup, as well as mentorship and advice from the international business community.

The theme of this year’s competition (Hult Prize 2017) has been chosen as “Refugee Crisis: Reawakening Human Potential” with a focus on restoring the rights and dignity of people and societies who may be, or are forced into motion due to social injustices, politics, economic pressures, climate change and war. The teams have been challenged to develop a disruptive for-profit start-up to eradicate the problem of refugee crisis, restore the rights and dignity of refugees, meanwhile building a sustainable social enterprise.

Hult Prize at Tribhuvan University : Our Journey so far

The 'Hult Prize at Tribhuvan University' was the quarterfinal round of the 8th Annual Hult Prize Challenge. The campus director for Tribhuvan University was Mr. Saujanya Acharya. The brightest of students from Tribhuvan University across various fields and levels competed amongst each other with their disruptive social start-up ideas and the winners of this event now get a chance to compete in one of the five regional finals being held at : Boston, San Francisco, London, Shanghai, or Dubai. Teams from around the globe will again compete in the regional finals and the winners from each regional final get an entry to the global finals happening at New York.

The on-campus event was held on 15th of December at Yalamaya Kendra, Patan. Of the 52 ideas submitted, a shortlisted 10 best ideas were selected for the final pitching event. Our team, ‘Aegis’ was judged the winner at the final pitching and has been awarded an entry to the upcoming Regional Finals happening in Dubai on March 3-4 where we will be representing Tribhuvan University and Nepal and showcasing our proposed start-up idea at an international stage.

The idea that got us selected as the winner amongst the 52 different participant teams across TU was to start a local, profit-driven, cottage industry-like venture at the refugee settlements where the refugees are trained to manufacture viable products. The produced goods are marketed  through the retail stores as well as an online platform where each product will be embedded with the underlying backstory of a refugee who manufactured that product, thereby, also bridging the social gap of identity and dignity between the refugees and the native residents.

Our Winning Idea

Summary

“Every soul has a potential, every soul has a story."

Our idea is to build a sustainable enterprise utilizing the potentials of refugees.

Furthermore, we are trying to figure out creative production and marketing techniques that will help us to produce quality products and deal with market demands. This includes utilizing the power of web. We will market our products on the internet. Since, our products have a level of abstractness, this factor may be utilized to boost our sales and hit up the social media. We may also focus on keeping the refugee problem a trending topic of discussion on social media. We can launch different campaigns that will be of benefit for our marketing on social media. Featured store is another part of our idea. We will collaborate with existing local stores to feature our products.

Relevance and Impacts

Through this project we want to explore the possibilities of creating a sustainable business model using marginalized community members. This will be done through the active participations of needy groups. Furthermore, we are trying to figure out creative production and marketing techniques that will help us produce quality products and deal with market demands. This includes utilizing the power of web. We will market our products on the internet. This project also will somehow help to figure out the possibilities of e-commerce in Nepal for micro-business. Since, our products have a level of abstractness, this factor may be utilized to boost sales and hit up the social media. We will try to find out the opportunities of using these types of abstractness in boosting business. This project will also give guidelines for doing different effective campaigns for awareness and marketing purpose.

Help Opportunity

As the winners of ‘Hult Prize at Tribhuvan University’, it is our responsibility to conduct preliminary research on our proposed startup model on any refugee settlement for proof of concept before attending the Regional Finals in Dubai. The research and experimentation of our idea requires budget beyond our affording capabilities. Similarly, attending the regional finals also requires the financial means to support for the travel and accommodation expenses. Based on our preliminary research results and experiences at the regional finals, we will also be organizing a workshop on “social entrepreneurship and building sustainable social enterprise” where we will be inviting participants from different universities or colleges.

This presents a opportunity where we propose to partner with the sponsoring party in our research campaign as well as our journey to make this world a better plce to live.
