John Severin Wild West Round-Up!

Charlton Neo  is a very small independent publisher devoted to releasing the best comics possible by some of the world's greatest creators. We focus on the under-served genres of the medium that the big companies don't put out much anymore, in the spirit of the original Charlton Comics. You'll be able to find sci fi, horror, romance, adventure and now we're releasing a cache of western classics.

By investing in the advance copies of these books, along with signed prints and even the vintage stats Charlton used to publish the original Billy the Kid comics, you'll be helping to give us the chance to keep our outfit afloat and keep publishing quality comics.

Thanks for your support, and if you're not able to help at this time, please share this page with your friends who appreciate excellent comics! It's much appreciated!

JOHN SEVERIN'S BILLY THE KID is a real treat for fans of the cowboy genre and aficionados of one of the most legendary comic creators. The stories were first published in 1960-61 by Charlton Comics and printed here from Charlton's original stats from the collection of illustrator and editor Bill Black. Bill has kindly lent the material to Charlton Neo to recolor, providing much more vibrant color than Charlton could have hoped for in the 60s. The recoloring, taking over a year, was a labor of love by editor and publisher Mort Todd, who had collaborated with John Severin for a long time as an editor, writer and penciler at Cracked magazine, Marvel Comics and on a newspaper strip. Below is an example of the original printed art and the newly recolored art.

These limited edition books will not be available to the public until later this summer, so this is your opportunity to get these collections before anyone else. They will be shipped direct from the printer's plant and you'll get them within two weeks after pledging. Furthermore, they are stamped with the date they were actually printed as proof of they being of the first limited advance run. The books are also available in digital format with links to read online or download sent withing 48 hours.

THE BLACK BULL
Before John Severin drew Billy the Kid (and hundreds of pages of other western comics), one of his first gigs was drawing the hybrid cowboy-superhero The Black Bull! Along with pals Will Elder and Harvey Kurtzman, years before they created Mad magazine, John did this unique strip for Prize Comics Western in 1948-49. The collection also includes the Black Bull's wild first adventure by Dick Briefer, who drew the fantastic Frankenstein series for Prize Comics.

As opposed to the Billy the Kid books, printed from Charlton's printing sources, this book has been reproduced from the vintage comics of 70 years ago. All the yellowing of the pages have been excised and cleaned up to make them look as close to the original printed experience as possible, flaws and all. Here's an example of the scanned page versus the new printed page:

Beyond the above books in print & digital, we are also offering some other unique incentives to coerce you into pledging!

For as little as $1, you will get our thanks and a link to download and print a high quality file of the cover of John Severin's Billy the Kid Volume 1 or use it as a screensaver. For you bigger spenders, we will send you a print, including a Black Bull one signed by artist Mort Todd and a Billy the Kid print from the comic cover to Billy the Kid #145 (11/81) signed by artist Bill Black.

Some of the original Severin Charlton Billy the Kid stats from the collection of Bill Black are also available. Since the original art is long gone, this is just as rare and a unique part of comics history. We have a limited supply, but offer interior pages:

A variety of splash pages:

And for two lucky collectors, the actual cover stats used to print Billy the Kid #19 (11/59) and #23 (7/60) and also used for John Severin's Billy the Kid Volume 1 & 2. These rare items come from Bill Black's personal collection and he will directly ship them to you in protective mailing.
