Little Angels Service Dogs
My name is Abby Bedwell, and I am raising money for Little Angels Service Dogs. Little Angels Service Dogs is a charitable 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that trains and places Service Dogs with disabled people in need. Little Angels has approved me for one of their life-changing—even life-saving—dogs.
In 2014, I was in a horrific accident that has left me with progressing disabilities. I suffer from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, POTS, Occipital Neuralgia, Fibromyalgia, and many symptoms related to my traumatic brain injury. I also suffer from PTSD from a severely abusive relationship. A Service Dog will certainly help me face the world, in spite of the difficulties I face. A Service Dog will help me get my life back.
I used to be an incredibly active young adult. I walked miles a day, riding multiple horses each day as well. That all changed on September 15th, 2014. At the scene of the accident, I was presumed brain dead. I seized multiple times, and was rushed to a level 1 trauma center with a closed head injury.
After the accident, I was in physical therapy for months. I started to regain my strength, and tried to continue my old life. But, unbeknownst to me then, I was left with the progressive disabilities mentioned above. After my initial rebound, I began to get sicker and sicker. My life since has been filled with many hospitalizations and doctors visits. I am now bedbound, unable to walk unassisted, and in need of a home care nurse. A Service Dog will help change all of this.
A mobility Service Dog will be trained to help me balance while walking, pull me when my legs begin to go numb, and brace for me during dizzy spells. It will be much safer for me to walk, because my fall risk will drastically decrease. He will alert me to when my heart rate starts rising too much, and lead me to a safe place to sit down. My dog will also pick up dropped items, retrieve medications, and other such things that help prevent me from injuring myself. These tasks will also be helpful because I struggle to bend from the chronic pain conditions I've been left with.
My dog would be trained to notice rising sensory stimulants, and remove me from the situation before my sensory overload starts. I could return to going to places like museums, local events, and even church.
Because of the abuse I suffered, I now struggle with severe PTSD. My Service Dog will help me conquer simple things I cannot do, like grocery shopping or dining out. My dog will be trained to alert me to rising anxiety, and remove me from the situation by guiding me to an exit/quiet place. He will block people from coming too close to me, alert me to people approaching behind me, and provide tactical stimulation to help remove me from episodes of dissociation. With these tasks, I will be able to tackle public areas again.
These are only a few examples of the many tasks my Service Dog will be trained to do to help me. My Service Dog will help me regain my life. I am blessed to have the opportunity to recieve a fully trained Service Dog from Little Angels. Please consider donating to help Little Angels Service Dogs train more dogs for people like me. Thank you for reading my story, and considering helping people like me.
I've been thinking a lot of all the things I'll be able to do again with my Little Angel. I'm going to be able to do simple things that I used to take for granted, like going grocery shopping again. I can go out with friends. I'll be able to get a job. To volunteer. To give back to the community that has given so much to me. All of you are what's making this possible for me, and others who have also lost their lives to their disabilities.
I'm very hopeful looking forward in my life, for the first time in a long time. Thank you to all of you for giving me my optimism back. Please continue to help by sharing my campaign so that Little Angels Service Dogs can continue to gift people their lives back.
