Service Dog for Kristen

Kristen is in need of a service dog to assist with her mobilility. Kristen has an Lupus like immune disorder, widespread arthritis, and fibromyalgia that all affect her balance and mobility. Over the past year, her mobility issues and several falls (UPDATE: Kristen fell in her home last week and sustained a fractured tailbone. This is her second tailbone fracture from falling this year) have led to her doctor recommend a large/giant breed dog to assist her. However, service animals are not covered under her insurance and as she is currently awaiting the results of her disability claim, Kristen and her family do not have the funds to pay for a service dog outright, which is on average about $15,000 with a nearly two year wait. After speaking with several organizations, the most cost effective solution is to purchase or adopt a pup and receive training in the home via a service dog trainer. A pup of the size recommended is approximately $1,500 plus $3,500 for training. Ongoing food and veterinary care are over and above the $5,000 asked and if the campaign exceeds that amount, a trust will be set up for those expenses.

A little about Kristen: Kristen is a stay at home mom and teacher to her 12 year old son who has Autism. She retired due to disability from a 16 year career in nonprofit fundraising and worked for such organizations as City of Hope and the National Stroke Association. She is currently working on her third attempt at receiving SSDI. Kristen also volunteered her time with giant breed dog rescues.
