Senior & Disabled Animal Sanctuary

This is Dorotea, and she needed a home. My grandma couldn't take care of her beloved 15 year-old cat anymore and I knew I had to find her the comfortable home she deserved.

[You have to see my amazing new pad!]

Placing an elderly cat in the perfect home home isn’t always easy. Bringing her on a long trip to the US at her age wasn’t a good idea, so I had just three days [while I was in Peru] to work a miracle.

What happened next was pretty much magic. We found Anahi Baylon, a 65 year-old librarian with a heart of gold. Anahi is a lifelong animal lover and a rescuer. Around town, she is known as the kind soul who will take in animals that no one else will and love them with all her heart.

When we spoke, I was honest. I told Anahi, “Dorotea is a senior cat that will need special care and attention.” She stopped me and said: "You don't need to tell me any more. Bring her over. I'll take her. She has a home here."

The very next day, my mom, Dorotea, and I drove to Anahi's home, a 2-hectare sanctuary on the outskirts of Piura, Peru.

[This is the road to Anahi’s house. She really is on the outskirts of town, so she uses solar panels for electricity and a pump to get water from a nearby river.]

When Dorotea and Anahi met, they immediately took to each other. She emailed me later that week to let me know that Dorotea was doing great, sleeping in her bed, and adjusting to her new home and friends.

[*Sigh.]

Anahi’s love for animals comes from her father and her grandparents. She has always had a cat and a dog, and even told me that her father once had a hen that was more obedient than a dog! Today, Anahi is caring for 25 cats and 10 dogs. They are all so lucky to have her.

[These are some of Anahi’s dogs hanging out in the gated, covered area of Anahi’s property. Here, they get to chill in the shade during the day. Anahi has 2 hectares of land, so the animals are free to run around the protected area if they want, too! The property is in northern coastal Peru, so it doesn’t get particularly cold.]

There is so much love at Anahi’s home. When I visited, I could see and feel the connection all the animals have with her. I could also tell that taking care of so many animals isn’t easy for her. She does it alone, and spends a significant portion of her salary feeding and caring for the animals.

Anahi is an amazing woman who has cared for many animals over the years and has never asked for anything from anyone. So I decided that the least I could do was create this page to raise money to help Anahi take care of her animals.

Meet some of Anahi's cats and dogs:

Lucas is a viringo (a Peruvian dog breed). He’s 14 years old and was diagnosed with cancer. One year ago, he was given 3 months to live. He (obviously!) beat that prognosis and is doing very well under Anahi’s care.

Peluson is a sweet little blind kitten someone brought to Anahi recently.

Luna was found injured on the side of the road and had to have her leg amputated. Since no one wanted to adopt her, Anahi took her in.

Van Gogh, who only has one ear.

Charlita has a skin condition and needs to be bathed weekly with medicated shampoo. Fun fact: She had a short stay at a nunnery before ending up with Anahi.

Snicker is diabetic, just like Anahi. They both take their meds at the same time every day.

Gardenia is an older lady with recurrent gingivitis.

Tuer, short for “tuerto” (Spanish for “one-eyed”) is lighthearted and seriously has a sense of humor. He was found after someone threw him off a building. He survived the fall, but unfortunately one of his little eyes didn’t...

[Giovanni hasn’t quite figured out he’s allowed to sleep *under* the roof.]

[And this little beauty's name is Merengue.]

I hope you will join me in helping Anahi take care of her animals. Thank you very much!!!
