Hello, my name is Heather La Force. I am an artist and yoga teacher living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. For the last ten years I have lived and worked in the Boston area after coming here for graduate school in pursuit of my Master of Fine Arts. I started practicing yoga in 2014 and soon began to observe the various effects it was having on the body and mind. Later, as my relationship deepened I attended my first 200 - hour training and began teaching all while continuing to paint. One of my many dreams has been to travel, create and collaborate with other artists. Well, the opportunity has just presented itself!
Recently, I was accepted to be an artist in residence at Asaan, a contemporary ashram located in Rishikesh, India. While there I will have the opportunity to merge two passions of mine and examine their relationship. Yoga will be explored as form of preparation and inform the creation of a new body of work. My intention is to give myself the permission to experiment with the process, application and content of painting to see what I discover. How does yoga prepare the body, mind and being for this investigative process? By intentionally placing myself in a state of unknowing I can challenge habitual ways in which I see my practice and evolve as yoga practitioner and creator.
In addition to painting, I will develop workshop material for artists and other populations that implement yoga and artistic expression. For artists, I am concerned with the longevity of their practice and have experienced how yoga supports the physical, mental and emotional demands of my creative practice. Seeing the multitudinous benefits this practice has had on my life and work I wish to share it with as many people as possible.
Travel has played an instrumental role in the development of many artist’s work and their process. I will be temporarily removed from that which is familiar and thrust into a space of growth-inducing uncertainty. I consider this integral to any personal or creative evolution.
However, in order for me to take advantage of this amazing opportunity I need your help. There is a lot to pull together in such a short amount of time. The trip is approximately two and a half months away. I am hoping to raise 3,000 to help offset the cost of flight, program, visa etc. If my art has ever brought a smile to your face and if you wish to invest in my continued education then please consider a donation of any amount.
