Hello all!

As you might have heard, I recently was accepted in an international bagpiping competition called Pipe Idol, and I am now one of 16 pipers invited to Scotland to compete. I am excited to be the only piper at this competition representing the United States, and I hope to make it into the finals, which will be held the week before the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland!

In case you haven’t heard my bagpipe journey, I started learning the bagpipes at age six, and when I was in 8th grade I began doing solo competitions. Each year I moved up a level, and now I am competing around the country in the top amateur grade—Grade 1—as well as competing with a nationally known pipe band. This past year, I was honored to win the Balmoral Classic and placed 2nd at Winter Storm—two highly recognized national competitions. I also won the Midwest region final competition in Chicago, and was recently named Piper of the Day at the Alma Highland Festival!  Now I’m excited to go to my first international competition right in the homeland of the highland bagpipes—Scotland. So far I’ve raised $650 toward my trip expenses, but I’ve got a ways to go.

Flying to Scotland and staying for nine days will cost approximately $3000 for me, and similar costs for each of my chaperones—my parents. I’m starting this GoFundMe as a way to raise some of the money for this trip.

Piping in Scotland has been a dream of mine for a long time, and that time is finally here! If you could support my GoFundMe and help me make this dream come true, I would greatly appreciate it. Even a small donation will help get me closer to my goal. If you have any questions, let me know and I’ll be happy to answer them for you. And if you’re interested in checking out my website, feel free to give a listen at www.joeypipes.com

Thank you so much!

Hi everyone:
We are back from Scotland, and what an amazing adventure! We are so grateful for the support from all of you. While Joey didn't place in the final Pipe Idol event, he learned so much about competing on the international level. While we were in Scotland, he was able to compete in the Perth Highland Games where he placed 5th in the "classical" piobaireached competition. He was also able to observe some of the top competitive pipe bands in their practice sessions. The World Pipe Band Championships were an amazing event, and we were also thrilled to attend a two-hour extravaganza concert performed by the St. Lawrence O'Toole pipe band. Glasgow is a gorgeous city, and we hope to be back next year as well now that Joey has learned the ropes. Back in the states, Joey recently won the Champion Supreme Grade 1 award during the highland games in Pleasanton, CA, over Labor Day Weekend. He heads to the Loon Mountain games in New Hampshire in two weeks, and is performing in Saginaw at a Scottish music concert next weekend. The exciting news is that he has been invited to the top two amateur piping premiere events in the US this year: the Nicol-Brown Amateur Piping Invitational (Scotia, New York in October), and the George Sherriff Memorial Invitational (Ontario in November). Once again, a deep thank you to all of you for your support and contributions to one kid's "pipe dreams." --Karen

Hi everyone:
Joey and I (Karen) are extremely touched by the generosity of everyone who contributed toward this trip. Thank you all again. We are so grateful for your support, and are excited to share the news that we made our total GoFundMe goal. In addition to the Pipe Idol competition, Joey has found another solo competition, so he'll be taking a train to the Perth Highland Games a few days before -- a good way to get his pipes acclimated to the Scotland weather. This Piping Live festival is bigger than anything I could have imagined -- the St. Lawrence O'Toole (SLOT) pipe band sold out a 2500-ticket concert in a matter of weeks, and we also had to pre-order our tickets to the World Pipe Band qualifier and finals competitions. Overall, there are dozens of piping events taking place across five locations 12 hours a day for a full week. Scotland is definitely home of the bagpipes! We leave in a little less than two weeks and look forward to sharing a few photos and other news when we return. Please hold us in your thoughts and prayers for a safe trip, our first overseas. --With gratitude, Karen and Joey

Hi everyone:
Thank you so much for all of the help and support I have received. All of this support has allowed us to move forward with planning for this amazing competition. I am flying to Glasgow with my mom on August 8, and my dad is flying in a few days later. We'll be there until August 19. I'll be staying with a lot of other pipers in the dorms at Glasgow Caledonia University, and I'm looking forward to meeting people from all over the world during the Piping Live! festival and the World Pipe Band Championships. Since I will have a few days in Glasgow before the Pipe Idol competition, I'm looking for some other area solo competitions that I might be able to enter as well. Here in Michigan, I've been playing pipes for a lot of events and doing a lot of yardwork and handyman jobs to earn money. So far everything is working out well. Thank you again for being such an important part of my journey! -- Joey Horwath

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for taking the time to make a donation to JoeyPipes! So far we have been able to purchase our plane tickets with the help of your generous contributions. Joey has been busy taking on extra paid piping gigs in addition to his weekend competitions, so he's playing out nearly every day. This past weekend he received two first place ratings at the Kincardine, Ontario, games. He drove home late last night and this afternoon is already on the road to The Bluffs in Traverse City to pipe the close of each golfing day. Next Saturday he plays two private events and a race kick-off on opposite sides of the state. The following week he's off to the Cambridge, Ontario, competitions along with a few piping friends. After that, he has morning solo competition at the St. Andrews Highland Games in Detroit and an evening full concert performance at the Dublin Irish Festival (Ohio) with the Great Lakes Pipe Band. Two days after that we get on a plane for Glasgow, Scotland!!! Feel free to check out Joey's updated website for live videos and his full competition schedule. www.joeypipes.com

With tremendous gratitude for your support,
Karen and Joey Horwath
