Send Elias to the Bang on a Can Media Workshop!

This summer, I have the chance to meet—and write about—my heroes and I need your help making my dream come true. Since I began my musical life as a new music-loving violist, I have revered Bang on Can, the premiere ensemble changing the contemporary music game since 1987. Bang on a Can has hosted a summer performance festival for many years and now offers a one-week immersive experience in music journalism and criticism for four early-career music writers. Much to my delight, I was just offered the chance to be one of them!

Attending the Bang on a Can Media Workshop as one of the four participants offers the chance to round out my writing abilities to encompass more than just the academic style. I love academic music writing—I begin officially training as a musicologist at UNC-Chapel Hill this fall—but academic-style scholarship is all about recording history that's already been made. As artistic innovation forges on ahead, I need the skills to write quickly about history as it's being made. The workshop allows the four participants to train with guest faculty John Schaefer (of WNYC's New Sounds) and Will Robin (writer and musicologist) while covering the development of summer festival performances and culminates in reporting on the famous Bang on a Can Marathon concert for NewSounds.org.

Tuition for the Bang on a Can Media Workshop is $1,500 which includes housing and some meals. Travel to MassMOCA in North Adams, Massachusetts from Lexington, Kentucky will cost around $500. As I was offered my spot at the workshop just last week, it is too late to apply for the university funding that supported my work at the Nief-Norf Summer Festival last year. Mollie and I are also moving to Chapel Hill, NC immediately following the workshop to begin my PhD at UNC-Chapel Hill! Good things often come in threes, but graduating from the University of Delaware, planning our move to UNC-Chapel Hill, and attending this workshop is difficult to swing financially so I am asking for your support.

Will you help me offset the cost of this opportunity to advance my music writing career? Your financial support in any amount will make it possible for me to attend the Bang on a Can Media Workshop and do the work I need to get my music writing sharp and ready for showtime.
