Coffee Kat, roaster at Logan House Coffee Co. is going to Reno to compete in the regional qualifying round of the U.S. Coffee Championship! The competition will be held December 9&10 at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center. (You can check out the competition page here: http://www.uscoffeechampionships.org/) This event brings coffee roasters, baristas, brewers, and tasters together to show off their skill in their craft.
In September, Kat got 4th place overall in the Rocky Mountain Roasting Rodeo, a competiton for coffee roasters from Arizona to Wyoming. Participating in that event set Kat's interest in competing on fire. Since then she has been working hard to gain more skill, knowledge, and expertese in this field.
The Reno competition will be comprised of two distinct parts: coffee roasting and presentation to judges.
1) Roasting: Kat has been given 65 pounds of green (unroasted) coffee beans. The trick is to roast this coffee to achieve an optimum coffee profile. Aroma, flavor, acidity, body, sweetness, and balance must work together to create a delicious cup of coffee. Judges will cup this coffee blind (ie: without knowledge of who roasted it) and give it a score.
2) Presentation: Kat will give a 5 minute presentation about the coffee she roasted. She will be judged on green coffee knowledge, roast knowledge, flavor descriptors and accuracy, and overall impression.
These two scores will be added up, and the top 6 competitors will move on to the U.S. Finals in Seattle next April.
Your support will allow Kat to attend this event and focus, not on the money, but on doing her best in competition!
The breakdown of funds is as follows:
$215 for CoffeeChamps Competition Fee
$80 for roundtrip flight from Denver to Reno, NV
$346 for hotels (4 nights)
$200 for food ($50/day for 4 days)
$100 for transportation ($25/day for 4 days)
$300 for lost wages ($100/day for 3 weekdays)
$98 for GoFundMe fee (7.9% of funds raised)
As a new roaster, Kat has been so grateful for the ongoing encouragement and support of her friends, family, and coffee shop - Logan House. Now, she needs just a bit more help to put her knowledge and skill on display at the regional level. Let's send Coffee Kat to Reno!
